Boys have a ----- girls have a -----

So, what do you call genitals for younger kids. For boys you kind of get by simply with 'willy' but I have no idea what the equivalent is for girls. My 8 year old daughter just asked and I didn't know what to say. Being blunt and anatomical seems a bit odd but maybe the simplest option.

Eg 'blah blah just kicked me in the .....’

When our daughters were toddlers we, ok I, felt that we should tell them the correct name, the one beginning with the letter "v". That was untill....and this was some years ago as number one daughter is now 18 and the second 16....our first born at the ripe old age of around five or six asked wifey's dad how to spell the "v" word. After that it became known, untill they started to grow up, as the "front bottom". By the way because my father in law is a Prof / scientist and physicist, apart from a slight eyebrow lift he gave her the spelling and she replied in her sweet little voice, as most little girl toddlers have, with a "thank you grandpa" as she then proceeded to write it down. Heaven knows what she was writing about at that age with that word i've forgotten now, anyway and either way, I crept out the room.

I'm confused, how have you managed to get by with 8 years of having a daughter, without having a word by which she can reference her 'bits'?
:-o
How has she referenced it being sore/itchy/whatever in the past?

Both of our daughters have always referred to them as their 'foo foo'
Our eldest (9) still uses the term, even though she's now fully aware of the correct term.

My son calls it his 'wee man' and my daughter says her 'bum'

Now I've no idea where they got these from, either Granny or Nursery

My daughter has always had "bits" up until now. But today she told me she hurt her "Noo noo" on her bike. Aged 8 by the way

Son has always had a "willy"

My four (almost five) year old has a todgy since he was about two. No idea what I'd suggest if he was a girl but my 42 year old wife reckons she has a Minnie despite me insisting otherwise LOL

My daughter (6) knows the correct anatomical names for both, as the school recently sent home letters asking that our children be told them to prevent titters later on in their education (not sure when sex education will start tho?)

She's always said 'minnie' and 'willy'. Which did arise in a funny situation a couple of years ago; she was asking me what all the different car badges meant, so, I was pointing out Audis, Peugeots, Fords, etc... One day she pointed at a car in a petrol station, and asked me what it was. I told her it was Mini, at which point she burst into fits of giggles - "Daddy, you can't call a car a minnie, thats just silly!"

My boy who is six tomorrow has a winky and my girl who 4 has a fanny. The first time we bathed them together my son was just over 2 and asked why she didn't have a winky so we had to explain.

Okay, colour me perplexed, but why don't most of you use the correct anatomical names, vagina and penis? Is it an embarrassment thing?

I discussed it with my wife after reading this thread and we've agreed that we will use anatomically correct labels from the get go. She was brought up with that and she thinks it's silly to use anything else; I tend to agree. After all, a child makes no distinction between labels so why not use one which is correct to begin with...

Because I rarely use them myself, unless I'm at the doctors. It makes you sound like a refugee from Victorian times in my opinion

"Good gracious darling , I appear to have a most interesting sensation in my penis. What say we engage in coltus. I pray ones vagina is not in disagreement ?"

You think using the proper word for something rather than some made up word makes someone sound old fashioned? If I said eye or stomach would you get the same impression?

Maybe it's because I've lived abroad for the past 20 odd years, but I think using a word as it should be used and not be embarrassed about it is the way to go. My wife, being Russian, was never indoctrinated into the "~snigger~, he said vagina" British culture which is more often than not hung up on genitalia and a lot of people tend to use the words only to swear, insult or talk about sex. So, yeah, call me "Victorian" if you wish but I'd prefer that than think like a [typically] ignorant [British] juvenile.

Oh, and yes, before anyone says, I know the anatomically correct word is Vulva for external female genitalia.

Its just slang in my opinion and just sounds less clinical. To me its no different to noggin or bonce for head. Or bum, posterior or arse.

No sniggering involved here

I guess it's sore spot for me. I was brought up in a quite ignorant household, was never educated about sex or body parts and there was far too much mystique and secrecy about the whole body thing. As a result, I was a confused teenager and rather hung up I must say. I refuse to do the same to my daughter and I certainly don't want her to grow up thinking there's anything wrong, or weird about any body parts or about sex.

Being open about things and using proper terms rather than made up words is a step in the right direction if you ask me.
