Getting induced tomorrow

At last! SWMBO is term +12 so the midwife has just been and booked her in at 3pm tomorrow for inducement. It's our first so nerves aplenty.

Excited though

Congrats, but good luck for the birth. It's an "interesting" experience to say the least!

I'm staying away from the business end. iPhone and iPad are charged, anything else I should be thinking about taking? Apparently it can be 18 hours before labour ever starts :S

You sound like me!
Trust me, by the time you are in hospital, you will have no use for the ipad! I actually forgot mine but inbetween contractions you only have about 3-5 mins once you are in hospital, and there is no way your wife/partner will want to watch anything while she is contracting!

I also wanted to stay away from the business end, but that is easier said than done. Plus when the baby comes out, there is "stuff" everywhere, there is no avoiding it.

The hospital won't let you go up unless your wife has already started contracting, and they are at least 45-secs to 1 min in length and are every 3-5 mins. If you go up, they will often send you home, or just tell you not to go up until you reach the magic number.

Personally, I would ensure you have some cooler clothes (it gets hot in there), a fan for your wife (they usually have them anyway), take some flannels to cool her down, changes of clothes for her - she may well want to jump in the bath with clothes on, plenty of snacky sugary food and drink, and have some patience. It's a long process.

Have fun.

Yep, not expecting to use the ipad during labour but we might be in for 18 hours before that starts. We're going at 3pm and I'll get sent home at 9pm if nothings doing. Then back in the morning at 9 if they don't ring me during the night. Could be there all day Friday 9-9 as well. Good idea about the cool clothes! Wouldn't have thought of that

Ah yes, sorry, I forgot you said she was being induced. In that case, get as many movies on the iPad as possible!

Id take a camera, grabbing shots of your few minutes old newborn are precious moments. As said before clothes, plenty of change for the car park meter., drink supply, a portable fan helped my mrs also.

yes do take a camera as it is otherwise likely only to exist as a hazy memory, seriously you will never go through anything like this in your life again including having another child so take a camera

Don't start pointing it at your wife as soon as the baby has popped out though, you may end up with a black eye!

The hospital should issue you with a pass for the car park (ours did), you shouldn't have to pay the whole time you are there.

Oh and don't be surprised if she swears violently at you if you offer any words of encouragement. However you shouldn't let that put you off doing so and continuing to do so even if she swears at you. If she looks like she's gonna give you the black-eye then maybe consider stopping with the encouragement

It's such a difficult situation. You want to help, but your help can be an annoyance. They turn into Satan during labour. Just remember, whatever she says, no matter what it is, she is right. But that is only for child birth, and then the rest of the time you are in awe of her ability to push the baby out. Once that is over, normal business is resumed.

Yep and get that car seat in as soon as possible! The baby could literally come at any point.

Have several changes of clothes for the baby, and your missus if she has to stay in for any longer. Also have a washbag for her as she will want a shower/bath if she is in over night.

Get some breast pads, and maternity pads as well. Very important!
And some nappy bags!

make sure you behave - many kids your age are learning how hard it is to be a dad. its hard enough when you are older and more worldy wise.

enjoy your youth and have as much fun as you can. you only live once!

Keep the wisecracks to a minimum, the missus won't like it and the staff have heard it all before. Oh and don't do what I did, which was to fall asleep leaning on the bed... It had been a long night and I was quite tired...... Oh, and I was laughing at the funny noises and expressions my missus was making, which is also not a good idea! But I couldn't help it as she was mooing like a cow! Cracked me up!

Lol. I closed my eyes for about ten seconds. Got screamed at and reminded that I "fell asleep during the birth" ever since

Just don't do it

My wife is booked in to be induced on 17th of this month, she is a week overdue today.

I have no plans to even be in the room once baby starts to make an appearance, that's what her mum is there for.

Inked, it's no place for manfolk that's for sure

Be there though, it's amazing and I'm not ashamed to say I cried like a little girl... talking of which.

Chloe Amelie Traynor was born at 10.24am on the 10th (before inducement!) weighing 7lbs 14oz.
