Much to everyones surprise, my wee nephew has passed all his GCSEs with flying colours. He's going to college to study Game Designing. I want to give him something to celebrate it and I was thinking about a good, entry-level book in the subject.....anyone have any ideas?

Something that he can understand, but is outwith the usual books studied in college would be ideal

Edited to add: We're in the UK (Scotland) so it would have to be books obtainable here thanks.
