PC vs Console Gaming

What do you prefer to play on?

I personally prefer consoles over PC's because everyone is playing it equal and it requires less work where as PC you need to keep upgrading and people could be playing mch better settings and quicker run times and faster response mouse etc and I cant be bother nor have the cash to keep up to date with it
I also like consoles exsclusives and the controller

So what do you prefer? Doesnt have to be a particular console although it can be same goes with PC

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

I've used and built PC's for gaming for over 20 years. You're able to get great image quality on PC games, but about a year or so ago I just got bored of the constant upgrades, tweaking and in my case overckocking mods. We got rid of my office and made a home cinema room out of one of our bedrooms with a Panasonic V10, PS3, 5.1 speakers and Sony amp. It's just nice to go home and have a game playing within a minute or so on a large screen. You also know you're not going to have any problems with it.

I think the amount of money spent works out fairly evenly: You pay up-front for a decent high-end gaming PC and pay less for the games. Consoles are 'cheap' but your software costs are higher.

I think that I'd be deadly with a mouse and keyboard on console FPS's, but it's nice having almost all players using the standard hardware and controllers.

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

PS3 all the way. Blu-Ray, DivX, DLNA, Free PSN Network Service, 120GB Slim Model now only £229 at Toys r Us.

PS3 120GB Black Console - Toys R Us - Britain's greatest toy store

You really can't get a better machine at the moment. Yes I'm biased, but listen, a decent graphics card and a blu-ray drive for a gaming PC will cost more than that. I've got two (60gb downstairs (upgraded to 160gb) and 40gb upstairs) and if one breaks, I'll be replacing it immediately with the 120gb Slim. I've borrowed an Xbox 360 from a mate for a while and the DVD drive noise is unbearable. That said - at the time there was better games on the 360, but that argument simply not true these days. PS3 has a great line up of software and the forthcoming exclusives are way more exciting too in IMB(iased)O.

Gran Turismo 5, God Of War III, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and XIV, Heavy Rain, The Last Gaurdian, Killzone 3 (I presume)....I bet there's a shed load more too.

I dont want to start a console war, god knows there has been a few on here.

The ps3 is a great machine. It has some great games and upcoming titles like the ones you've listed, plus having a blu ray drive can be a bonus if you haven't got a dedicated player.

I appreciate your bias, because I am too but to the 360. Multiplatform is the way forward if you want to experience all the best games that both systems have to offer. TBH though I don't have a massive amount of time to game, so getting a ps3 would be pointless for me, plus I've got a blu ray drive in my HTPC.

I still think the 360 has some great exclusives and some potentially great upcoming titles. I love the dashboard and the added functionality like sky player and am looking forward to upcoming features such as facebook and last.fm. I'm also a fan of achievements and gamerscore and feel these add massively to the replayability of games I buy. Lastly I really like xbox live and love the party system when playing online. I feel the sub is well worth the money.

true similar statements can be said about the ps3 like the ability to browse the web, the ability to play different file types and whats offered by PSN for free, so it really comes down to personal preference and factors like the console your friends own.

I think its already been posted but if you could use a mouse and keyboard in a console fps, you'd certainly be onto a winner

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

360 for pretty much everything these days. Can't be bothered spending more time tweaking and patching instead of playing PC games. The only PC games I still play are oldish RTS games like Age of Kings or Civ4. RTS games are IMO unplayable without a mouse so I avoid those on the consoles.

Also use the PC for MAME and emus but have no interest in modern PC games now.

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

I binned all the games off my PC about two weeks after getting my 360. As a result I haven't needed to upgrade the PC in nearly 3 years. It's only Windows 7 thats forced me to step away from AGP Gfx and IDE drives.

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

I don't know if its me just being an old git but I still have major trouble aiming in FPS games on the Xbox compared to the PC.

Looking at the trailers for Dragon Age: Origins the PC seems to blow the xbox and PS3 version out the water in terms and GFX and controls.

The other side of the coin is that having mates round for a game of footy or something is a damn site easier in the living room on a console rather than on a PC

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

My gaming PC that cost me about £1,200 last year is now solely used by my dad to browse the net in the office...

I use my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and Windows 7 for day to day PC use and as of tomorrow Football Manager 2010 and the 360 for all gaming, i know a PC is technically better but i never had any fun with it.

I'm exactly the same, my have a lappy now that won't okay the latest games, it'll manage civ 4 and peggle ok which is about all i need.

Also, this thread is about console vs pc in general, prattling about how your ps3 is the best option and is better than 360 is entirely irrelevant (not saying you're wrong though - santa may be bringing me one in a couple of months).

PC gaming will always give you the absolute best GFX and latest tech if you're willing to pay for it. However, if I may use my car analogy again (from the last thread), not everyone needs a Ferrari, we can do just fine with a Ford.

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

I think it depends on the game, I know the keyboard/mouse combination is so popular among PC gamers that they complain about console gamepads - I've the other way around, I just cant get used to it.

Games like C&C need to be played with a mouse, played these games on both Pc & 360 and the latter is a just a pain.

As for whats best? Well having a PC, a PS3 and 2x 360's I'm afraid I'll have to plump with the PS3, despite the controller being stuck in the 90's - it's just a joy to use due to the build quality and slick design and the old "phat" consoles still look stunning and compliment any AV kit rack.

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

I have a gaming PC but rarely use it for gaming, as alluded to above by isaachuntuk it's too easy i find to aim on the PC, the mouse gives a far greater accuracy, and because of that you can get wasted in MP games too unrealisticly for my liking, a console joypad takes a while to get used to after M+K but is a great leveller and allows for more fun games imo.

These threads are getting tiresome and stupid. Its a bit like saying who would you most like to see naked Megan Fox or Dot Cotton.

Consoles are using 4+ year old pc tech and the pc has moved on many generations since then.

If you have a half decent pc it craps all over a console.

If you want low res with jaggies and a low frame rate then go for a console. If you have trouble setting up your video recorder to tape a program then go for a console.

If you want the best visuals, max eyecandy and most flexible gaming system then go for a decent pc.

Its really as simple as that.

Re: PC vs Console Gaming

They are like cars. They can get you where you want to go but a PC is like getting a Formula 1 racing car.

PCs offer higher quality graphics, bigger games, 25 year back catalogue, and given time you can get a PC to emulate consoles.

LOL @ Razor.
"Watercooled Games HTPC: LC17, P6T Deluxe, i7 920@4.0Ghz, DTek FuzionV2, 4870X2+EK waterblock, 64Gb SSD, 6Gb, Forte, Enermax 1250W Rev+, Zalman Reserator XT, PA120.3"
Yep, that's cheap to buy (<>£1.5K), run and low maintenance.

jamienufc: The 360 is an excellent bit of bit. It was really torn between the two consoles, some of my friends have the 360, some have the PS3. In the end it was the BluRay drive and the noise level that swung it for me.

isaachuntuk: I know what you mean re the controllers. I've been playing on the PS3 for nine months now and still find FPS aiming tricky on a controller. I know there are mouse controllers available, but they're right-handed only and using a mouse isn't that good in a lounge chair. I guess it's just a time thing - many years of using a mouse will take a while to overcome.

What? Engineered to last two races before requiring a bebuild? :D Only kidding - it's all about time and effort, working with PC and networking issues all day, it's nice to go home to something that just works. I did enjoy my years of tinkering and max o/c-ing, but now I'm just enjoying the games.

To be honest Razor, while I can see what you're saying, I think you're being a touch harsh on consoles. Most of my favourite games of the last 2-3 years haven't been available on a PC and I value that above anything else.

Of course it's all been done to death and there's fundamentals of the debate that can't be disputed. Simple answer is, if you can afford it, own every platform you can

QFT!

I can go into Gamestation, pick up any 360 game and it will just work. I don't need to sweat over system specs, HDD space, drivers, etc, etc.

I fix computers all day at work, I don't want to do it at home as well. I just want to park my ass on the sofa and do some gaming.

Thats just one of my machines and it was built as a high end rig. I dont really care about how much it costs to run but how nice the experiance is.

I dont think I am harsh with consoles just a bit blunt about them.

I totally agree with you mate that if you love your games you should have every platform, which is what I have. I just hardly ever play my consoles these days as most games are multiplatform and always look allot better on the pc so thats my platform of choice. I have enjoyed games like infamous, fable 2, crackdown, ratchet and clank, resistance 2 on the consoles and some of these games have been my favourites games of the year.

I never have any issues with my pc's and its all plug and play. Things really have moved along allot for pc's in terms of plug and play and the experiance is not really different to that of a consoles. There is no need to tinker to get games working or running correct and if your pc is half decent you can wack everything on full without the need for tweaking.

That's being kind about it.
His PC shades never come off.
I have a Rig, used to always game on PC.
Now consoles are just so much quicker and easy to use.
He talks all day about jaggies and poor resolution, but that's probably because he spends all his money on his Rig, so cannot afford a decent Full HD tv and so this is why consoles look so bad to him.

Well I thought the Dot Cotton v Megan Fox analogy was harsh. Surely it's more Peggy Mitchell v Megan Fox

If you can afford it, crack on. I can only really justify ~£20 month on gaming, the 360 meets my needs perfectly.

I'm all spent out just now after upgrading to Win7, total cost (hardware and software) £60.

Thats fair enough mate. Cut the cloth to suit your needs so to speak. There is nothing wrong with that.

I have to disagree with you on the last bit, the last two games I've played on PC being Crysis and NFS Shift, have required a fair amount of tweaking, I really wish they were plug and play.

Whilst I appreciate your knowledge of PC systems which helped me put together my system I do find you attitude towards consoles rather odd, comparing them to teletext, divX and tom toms......

There's some very good games out on consoles at the moment not available on PC, and more coming shortly that as a gamer cannot be ignored.
