Smile are there monitors to play games on

Hello to one and all, my first post here, so thanks in advance to any replies.
I dont want a new tv,
Need to connect up xbox 360, ps2 and wii, to a monitor, is there one that can do this without using a vga box, or transformer of sort. I want to use the original cables for the consoles.

I was thinking is it possible to get a monitor with composite or component connections like a tv, not sure which one I need for the three consoles. I am also not sure about the difference between composite or component connections.
Ive seen a few monitors like this like LG W2363V which boasts of components, cant give the url but its on the cite techradar, this seems like it could work, but cant seem to find it to buy anywhere.

I am in the UK

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: are there monitors to play games on

You'll either need one with 2x HDMI or 1xHDMI + 1xVGA, and 1 xComponent.

This one looks like it has all the inputs you'll need:Samsung T200HD 20" LCD TV/Monitor Freeview 1680x1050 300cd/m2 10,000:1 5ms DVI/HDMI Rose Black 3 Years Warranty - Ebuyer

I searched for HDMI monitors, more here: Monitors | PC Monitors | LCD Monitors | TFT Monitors - Ebuyer.com

Component upscales but it's not technically a HD resolution. I personally don't think it makes a big difference on a smaller screen.

Why does it have to have no TV tuner? You don't have to use it if you don't want to.

The ones I can see that have a component input have a TV tuner in (with the excepion of the above). This is because component is generally an AV connection, not a PC connection. Those wanting an AV monitor will generally want a tuner in there as well.

I wouldn't really agree with the connectivity that Cas398 mentioned as i'd say the best option would be..

HDMI

Component x 2 (or Component x1 and VGA x1 if you have a Wii VGA pack)

2x HDMI would not be essential for what you need as only 1 item can connect via HDMI.

EDIT : The LG one you mention does look like a good monitor with good connectivity so i'd be tempted to dabble with that one.

The difference between component and composite is huge really. With component you can transmit HD & SD progressive signals upto 1080p. The video signal is sent via 3 separate wires with component. Composite is basically all of the video signal down one cable and can only transmit SD interlaced signals. You don't want to connect your PS2 or Wii via composite as Component is far better and can give you a good 480p signal.

The only issue is that the PS2 and Wii just come with composite cables so you would need to buy component cables if you wanted to connect via component.

PC monitors generally won't have a composite connection.

What lol? Why can only 1 device connect via HDMI? I never said 2x HDMI was ESSENTIAL.

I don't see why you would need any more than 1x Component and that won't be as common.

Read back your post.

Where do you get that he'll need one with 2 x HDMI from? Only one device can connect via HDMI. The only device there that can connect via HDMI & VGA is the 360.

The options you suggest above are..

1x HDMI - 360
1x HDMI - unused
1x Component - Wii or PS2

or

1x HDMI-360
1x VGA - Wii (if he imports the VGA lead)
1x Component - PS2

The 1st option would not allow all the devices to be connected and the 2nd would only work if he imported the VGA lead.

How would you suggest he connects things then?

Ah fair enough . It's probably dabble with the LG one you mentioned earlier and either import the VGA lead for the Wii or buy a Component splitter and have the PS2 & Wii going via the Component.

The Cheap component Switches (usually less than £10) are ideal and I have used them in the past to connect a Wii and PS2.

I originally thought the OP had a PS3, not 2, sorry.

Hey CAS FAN, where have you seen connectors for £10 could you recommend one for the wii and ps2, as I was looking into them and they were boxes ranging from £50-£100 at Maplins.
Ps Im a girl, to come clean, I am a little confused about this all
I have dvi for the xbox so its just the wii and ps2 that I need to connect.

Cheers

I used to use something similar to this - LINK.

Basically it's a manual switch so you just flick it to the input you want to show. I used one for ages on both a projector and my main TV and there was no degredation in the quality of the picture.
