I also read elsewhere that developers believe that the iphone 3gs is more powerful than the nintendo wii!

I wouldn't expect to see any huge leap for at least a year.

Most people haven't upgraded and probably won't for some time. Putting out exclusive titles that require a 3GS (rather than the small upgrade you get on say, Doom) will annoy the bulk of the userbase and more importantly, probably not sell enough units to make it worthwhile to the developer.

Its all very misleading stuff. The 3GS is not more powerful than the Wii. It can, in theory, render as many polygons per second, but cant render the effects the Wii can, or at the resolution. Its a numbers game some have played very cynically. Its been done many times by fanboys and IHVs to make their product of choice seen better than it really is.

As for Half life 2, well its a very scalable engine, the iphones screen is pitifully low resolution by modern smart phone standards, it isnt hard to render a game at that resolution, with reduced feature set capabilities. Windows mobile devices powered by nvidia Tegra, or Qualcomm snapdragon processors are more powerful than the 3GS, so its really not that special really.

I think the bigger obstacles as you mention is the screen resolution, but also the control interface and the battery life.

I am quite chuffed as I got a 3GS this week but didn't realise the monster contained within. TBH I am just really pleased with the extra battery life and how quickly it loads up the current apps I have.

The power isn't what is holding it back. it needs a bluetooth analogue stick and buttons or similar.

Trying to use half the screen as a control pad is horrendous!
