I only ever played this on my Amiga but I loved it... What is the best version (Console/Arcade/Amiga etc). I want to be able to play it on my hacked PSP

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

You will need mame for true arcade games. SNES and Megadrive are console versions of the game. The arcade is the original version.

Defo on the megadrive though i don't think they made a snes conversion.

*Edit quick comparison for you*

amiga

YouTube - Amiga Longplay [037] Rainbow Islands

megadrive

YouTube - MD Rainbow Island SPEED RUN1/2 レインボーアイランド 最速クリア1/2

arcade

YouTube - Rainbow Islands 74,009,330 Pts All Clear By Essekappa 1/7

Pc engine

YouTube - Rainbow island pc engin

There's also a crappy looking (in comparison) nes version you don't want and obviously the 8 bit c64, amstrad etc versions.

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

I bought Rainbow Island Evolution for my PSP a couple of months ago and found the game so boring and different from the arcade version that I turned it off after 15 minutes and haven't played it since.

The game is just loads of boring mini games.

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

Personally, I've only played two versions, the arcade and Commodore 64 versions.

I'm not saying the C64 one is better, but I spent many hours playing it as a kid.

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

I had the Megadrive & Amiga versions and have the arcade version on my Jamma/MAME cab. I also had the Speccy version which was OK, but (just as with the other 8 bit versions) doesn't compare to the others. The PCE version is highly regarded though and as you can tell from the above comparison from Haggler, it's a good conversion.

All 3 versions I had are decent but to put them in order (best to worst) it's pretty much as you'd expect...

1) Arcade
2) Megadrive
3) Amiga

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

I may look for the MD version.

PCE was a console I was interested in buy never actually played on one, any classics I may have missed?

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

This game used to annoy me so much, could get to the Vampire level without losing a life, then lose everything trying to defeat the vampire boss.
That was the Atari ST version, broke many a joystick. Great game though.

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

The Saturn version is pretty good, it came with Bubble Bobble.

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

The Saturn version is very good. It does indeed come with Bubble Bobble (with slightly retouched graphics) - and it also features an enhanced version of Rainbow Islands which has the graphics updated in line with the 32-bit era.

One problem with this game is that your progress, high scores etc. are not saved to backup memory. Bit of a shame really.

Re: Best version of Rainbow Islands?

The Amiga version was the first game I ever played that I considered to be an arcade perfect conversion.

Programmed by Andrew Braybrook IIRC

The Amiga version is in my top 10 ever favourite games.

I'd love this to come to XBLA
