Exclamation I cant beleive what I have just ordered

The missus birthday is approaching and I asked her what she would like for her Birthday. She once again replied that she would like a Nintendo Wii.

I have been trying to put her off one of these low res machines since they came out but it seems I have failed.

Get used to having to grit your teeth and play Wii sports properly, I always have to refrain from being very unsportsmanlike and just sit on the couch twitching my wrist getting perfect shots each time.

Fortunately, don't have one at home, would be interested in Super Mario Galaxy though, its not all bad

It's a great idea mate honestly just ignoring the lo res, make sure you get hold of rayman raving rabbids tv party and watch in awe from the sofa as she swings about with the remote making a complete fool of herself, bits will bobble and sway and it really is something else to watch, honestly it's the best money i ever spent had me in stitches for ages though i didn't mention why, just try to avoid having a go yourself as it works both ways.

Re: I cant beleive what I have just ordered

I got a Wii just after they came out and sold it less than six months later after the novelty wore off (made a tidy profit too as it was still hard to get hold of!). However, I did enjoy it while it lasted and there are far more games out now than there ever were.

I bought a 360 with the funds and never looked back.

Also, I know of loads of people with a Wii who play on it a few times a week and are really pleased with it. These people are what I would call 'non-gamers' (my partner's parents for example), although the fact they are playing on it would make them gamers I suppose! I actually ended up playing Wii Sports more than anything else! I still play on the tennis, golf and bowling sometimes when we go around the their house for tea.

I don't think I'd get one again though, unless my kids wanted one when they got a bit older.

I think if Project Natal really is as good as it looks, then it will give me my motion sensing gaming fix!

Re: I cant beleive what I have just ordered

An overrated console if ever there was one! Well perhaps not, it has achieved a lot, but I just find the games so damn shallow... The only thing that kept me interested was the Bowling on Wii Sports, it seemed to truly be accurate to your movements! Also if you add on the cost of extra controllers, Wii fits etc etc it gets bloody expensive.

Re: I cant beleive what I have just ordered

Let me put this into prospective, i haven't played on my 360 for about a year or so now, yes it looks great on my hdtv when compared to the wii but basically i am just fed up of playing the same old things, the same applies to most pc stuff and for me at least i only use it for browsing, utilities and playing rts games.

True the wii has a really big pile of absolute rubbish titles, however in amongst the crud there are a few stellar titles which the wii's control method makes even better, tiger woods 10 on wii is fantastic imo, yes the 360 version looks better but you can't compare the control.

Mario kart wii looks great even on a nice big screen, mario galaxy ain't bad either and i loved both versions of boom blox all of which aren't available on anything else, true i don't play on it as much as i used too either but that's just me atm i don't play much of anything.

You've ordered it now so make the most of your purchase as it may make a pleasant change, though you might not want to post afterwards and admit it .

Re: I cant beleive what I have just ordered

I predict the Wii will be left un-used in a few months time.

I really am shocked that I have bought one of these machines. I was even more shocked at how expensive the controllers were and that I had to buy an adapter to use the Wii online.

It should just connect to your wireless network (assuming you have one)

Indeed all top notch games along with Mario Karts but after these, it's fairly slim pickings imho.

I still have mine, just picked up TW10, but prior to that I hadn't switched it on in nearly 6 months.

Anyhow Razor I don't know why you're complaining, it's going to look so good on that little TV you have in your front room

In all seriousness, I find 480i gives the best image for some strange reason. I certainly wouldn't set it at 480p, the deinterlacing of the Wii is awful

Re: I cant beleive what I have just ordered

I was pleasantly surprised to find mario kart looks great on my 37" gaming tv and not much different on my 40" main though both are through component, much better than i thought they would look tbh, you're first purchase should definitely be an official component cable though it can be a blurry mess otherwise.

I know Razor uses a much bigger screen but hey try it first and knock it later, either way you're stuck with it anyway

Re: I cant beleive what I have just ordered

My friend has one of these on his 42" 720p plasma and it looks awful. He is using the standard lead (not component). I haven't the heart to tell him as he thinks it looks great.

I am just wondering how poor this is going to look on a 70" 1080p screen.

Yeah, definitely component is the way to go but I set it at 480i. Other TV's may well work better at 480p

I think the PS3 and 360 are low res enough and they often frustrate me in terms of visuals. The wii is the next step down from that.

Cheers for the heads up on the settings mate.

Re: I cant beleive what I have just ordered

It's not a bad little console really and there's a lot more to visuals IMO than resolution and other technical facets. Sure it won't start to compete on a technical level but I find some of the games (Mario Galaxy, Okami, Mario Kart, Little Kings Story, Metroid Prime 3 etc.) very appealing to look at.

I am quite artistic in my nature though and really do appreciate good art direction and styling in games. Infact I can appreciate those elements more than the technical elements. Any half decent computer artist can produce high res detailed graphics on a PC, but it takes a high element of artistic ability to produce a work of art. From conversations we've had you do seem to much prefer the technology behind game visuals, i.e. you often talk of resolution, AA, high res textures, framerate and other technical areas, but rarely talk about the art behind a games visuals. Nothing wrong with that as people just like and look for different things in their visuals, but just the same, there's certainly nothing wrong with prefering great art direction in a game.

I can overlook poor textures, a lack of AA and a low resolution if the art direction is superb. I can't overlook amaturish and poor art direction however, no matter how technically superb the visuals are. Obviously having both is the ideal, but I do find that the Wii has some of the most beautiful games (from an artistic point of view) released on it.

The Wii motion plus is also very good and works very well with games like Tiger Woods (the Wii version is easily the best version IMO due to the controls) and Wii Sports Resort.

I'm pretty sure that it's not the console for you however mate as your interest in gaming does lie almost fully in the technology side of things. I can't even start to see you being able to look past the technically poor visuals. The resolution and the quality of some of the textures will probably see you coming down with some form of strange illness!

I think you have summed me up perfectly there mate.

As long as the missus likes it and uses it thats all that really matters I have loads of other toys to play with and take up my time.

She'll probably like it mate . Mine dabbles with the Wii now and again and she really likes Little King Story. They also really like these fitness games where you prance about on one of them there balance boards! That said, I guess buying something like Wii Fit as a gift as well is kind of dangerous!! "You saying i'm fat!!!"

There are some good games on it, but really they are few and far between and I must admit that I rarely play on it.

Re: I cant beleive what I have just ordered

I set it all up for 'her indoors' today and all I can say is it reminded me of Teletext with an interactive tv remote.

The missus is happy so that's all that matters, she wants all the fitness games and is already making a list of titles to buy. As long as she is happy its all good. I doubt I will be using this machine much.
