Does Gamefaqs (cheat/faq sites) kill your game enjoyment?

Just wondered if anyone else suffers this?

I get really into a game (especially RPG or similar), I suddenly get the urge to research character development and items and stuff in Gamefaqs or wikis, then kabamm suddenly I am no longer interested.

I am thinking that maybe just looking at everything I can do and trying to make plans for the perfect character, just kills my enjoyment. I know exactly what the character can do with what items, there is no fun in picking something up.

Instead of missing things, I suddenly get bogged down with trying to get everything and it becomes like a chore ticklist.

Playing Fallout 3 I am desperately trying not to succumb, I play it in small bits, I have only looked up the wiki's to look at bobbleheads. I try to resist looking up to see what items are where etc.

Does anyone else find that looking at Gamefaqs is a sign of impending doom for your enjoyment of a game?

Probably, the first game i checked online for item locations etc was phantasy star online on the dreamcast, but only after putting in over 200 hrs in the single player mode and at least another 100 hrs online, it was probably the first game to have so much stuff to find and you couldn't use most of it without having about 10 characters.

Prior to that in the days of the c64, amiga, snes and n64, etc you had to play the games to get the items as the internet was bloody crap and sites like gamefaqs probably didn't exist, i think if its there there's always the temptation to use it, if you didn't know it existed you would get back to playing the game

Re: Does Gamefaqs (cheat/faq sites) kill your game enjoyment?

I use walkthroughs (Gamefaq.com) every now and then - if I get stuck at a specific point in the game I will check the guide, solve my issue and move on without it. It doesn't spoil the game for me at all - indeed it means I continue playing. If I was stuck and completely at a loss what to do next then I would quickly get bored and move on.

Gears of War 2 is a good example. I've started it today and got to a part where you had to kill a Brummuck with a mortar. The game didn't deem it important to tell me how to range the mortar so, after numerous attempts of failing to kill the creature, I checked a FAQ and quickly found out I just needed to hold down a key to get range. It could have taken me hours to work this out - especially as the previous checkpoint was a good 5mins earlier.

I rarely use sites like these but on the odd occasion they have been really helpful. As Rasczak said you can get stuck in some games and sites like these often help you see the woods from the trees and progress past an often stupid sticking point.

Re: Does Gamefaqs (cheat/faq sites) kill your game enjoyment?

I find them beneficial really. If i'm really stuck on a game (and I mean properly stuck after a lot of trying) then i will consult a walkthrough. If I get to the point where i'm no longer enjoying the game and will just stop playing if I can't advance, then using a walkthrough can give the game more longevity for me.

It's kind of against the point of a game to use them all of the time though.

I know, but I can't help myself It is really during RPG type games, I want to know how the stats and things work together, then I read too much and I get bored of the game.

I am getting Demon Souls hopefully delivered next week, must stay away from Gamefaqs

Re: Does Gamefaqs (cheat/faq sites) kill your game enjoyment?

The few times I ventured on Gamesfaq.com I felt super guilty afterwards! Have no idea why really - guess I feel like games are to be conquered, beaten, finished or whatever you want to call it and looking at a FAQ is admitting the game beat you.

I havnt used one for a long time now, some games I get stuck on I'll switch it off and come back to it and I'll always get there eventually - and once you do figure it out, thats a damn good feeling.

So yes, FAQs do kill my enjoyment of a game through the 1st play through.

Re: Does Gamefaqs (cheat/faq sites) kill your game enjoyment?

I have a sneaky look at the fallout wiki sometimes but the games so damn big its hard not too and some things on there you would never find without reading about it or hearing about it somehow.

I don't think you really get cheats for new games do you? not like old classics like sonic and GTA and ps1 i remember trying for hours to whack in cheats in the right order on some old sega games lol.
