this might seem like a thick question but what listening modes do people use on theirs?

im using "dolby digital movie" but it seems dialogue is quiet and music is really loud when watching films so i end up turning it up and down so i dont upset the neighbours!

the speaker set up is fine and ive done the audessey mic set up

any ideas??

Try under Hardware Setup->HDMI
Power Control:Disable
• When set to “Enable”, power consumption will increase.

Try using Audyssey Dynamic Volyme: Light.

My 876 went above that with no problems.
Try to have the temp visible and see what temp it has when it switches off by itself. If it happens repeatedly around the same temps, you might have
a problem and a new rack and/or a fan might be the cure.

Well, Onkyo seems to think that anything below 60 is ok.
A 876 user did some innovative experimenting some time ago...

Did an experiment by putting a hairblower on the heat sensors to see when the fans will start to work.

from 60 C it will start on L (low)
from 65 C it will go to M (medium)
from 75 C it will go to H (high)

When temp goes down again the fans will run longer, well into the mid 50 C zone, below 55 C they will stop.
The L speed is a low dB sound, but you will hear them.
On M it is starting to be loud !
On H it is crazy, I do not understand why Onkyo uses these loud fans.
I do think that the users with normal use of the amp will never see or hear the fans at work, as the starting temp of 60 C. is high.

Grrr, after six months or so trouble-free on my third 906, I'm trying to watch the Spanish football on Sky Sports HD3 but am getting that tell-tale black flickering every now and again - it's deja vous from my first 906, which I got a refund on due to the HDMI board going on it.

So much for third time luck... if it's gone again then no idea what amp I'm going to go for this time around

Is the 906 worth the roughly $200 US more over the 876?
Or should I stick with my 876?

* I don't need the Ethernet port, or even the front USB jack.
...Mainly talking about audio quality, with the toroidal transformer (versus the EI core of the 876), one additional secondary transformer (one pound heavier, total weight, than the 876), Speakers A or B (separate adjustments), all Gold Plated RCA jacks and Speaker's binding posts.

Any objective opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi guys, I'm no expert so go easy, I've recently got a 906 and among other things have got my sky hd going through it and out to my Samsung 46" 7020.

I'm getting an annoying motion judder while watching the football, I just unplugged the HDMI lead from the back of the reciever and plugged it straight into the sky box instead so that the sky picture goes straight to the tv and it's gone away.

Any ideas what might be causing this? could one of the leads be faulty? or is there something in the Onkyo settings that could be wrong?

Edit: just tried changing settings on the main monitor out, setting it to through seems to stop this happening...does this meen that the upscaler doesn't cope with sky hd well?

The plus points you state above are valid, but only if your a new buyer trying to make a choice imo. If you already own a 876, enjoy it and rest assured that you have a ace receiver. I doubt the extra investment will be worth it at this time. Don't you like the audio quality? Buy something else for the extra money. Wait a couple of years and buy a new receiver all together. There is always a reason to be found to do a upgrade. I know where your coming from as i to have the: 'need to upgrade to the next best thing virus'. It's part of the hobby but don't be an addict.

Since having mine replaced sometime ago I not had flickering pictures... Although, I do have an issue in that it takes ages (10-15 minutes) for a picture to display (SkyHD) when the amp is first fired-up (from standby); once up and running everything is fine... until next morning.

Interestingly this doesn't affect the set-up menu.

Tried playing with various settings as I though it might have started when trying to get a Nintendo Wii working but to no avail.

Doesn't bother me too much as its the kids that turn it on first thing!

Any ideas?
Simon

finally solved the 1st hdmi problem with the 906

then swopped tv's and now have another problem

so now ive got a new tv this week, the sony 46ex403

anyway, as before i run everything into the amp and have one hdmi cable running to the tv

on blu-ray, dvd and HD dvd there are no issues at all.

However with sky i have noticed a problem. One some channels it is fine (BBC1 for example) then when you change channel (to Dave or Living for example) the screen just goes black and the 1080p thing flashes up on the top left of the tv.

has anyone else had a similar problem or got any ideas on how to solve this?

thanks in advance :-)

Hi,
Strange problem appeared overnight - no HDMI video output from the 906 whatsoever. I have HDMI Out Main connected to the TV which up until today was working fine, but today I can't get any output at all - and without anything changing. I' ve tested all the obvious (Sky HDMI out straight into TV which works fine, Using HDMI Out Sub which doesn't achieve anything, different cables, etc), but nothing will appear. I don't even get the Onkyo start-up screen appearing...

Any ideas? I'm on version 3 of the amp - been back to Genserve twice already for different problems - surely not another one?

Thanks,
Paul
