Sony have had a bad year and just posted huge losses, so wouldnt be surprised if they have cut back on R&D funding on OLED TV's

Yes, I read that too.

As i understand, LCD panel development/production is shared (or owned) with Samsung, so maybe Sony saw OLED as an open window to advance competitors??

But given the current economic situation, in particular Sony aswell, Would it be wise to share R&D again?? Who knows...

I hope comercial products donīt get delayed. Every time i see more moviles with some sort of OLED panels, so is it time to bring Tvīs to the market?

Bye

That's right the panels used by Sony are actually manufactured by Samsung. I currently have a Pioneer Kuro plasma but I do believe the future is OLED, so by the time I upgrade in about 5 years OLED will dominate the market.

Re: Sony Denies Giving up on OLED

Isn't a lot of sony stuff nowadays made by samsung. I seem to remember a lot of their cameras were basically samsung's with a carl zeiss lense stuck on the front. Same with camcorders and many other products. I believe samsung is now a much larger company than sony and keen to create unique technologies to further enhance their lead. In the past sony televisions had their own superior technology like trinitron for crts but now thats gone. They had walkmans in the past but sony's mp3 players are irrevelant now as ipods rule. It just seems like Sony has lost the battle to justify its brand and often markets products with slightly inferior performance to competitors but with higher pricing. On most of the things I've bought I've found Panasonic to offer better performance and price ratios than Sony.

The point is if Sony doesn't have some unique technology of its own then I can't see it doing that well. If it shares everything with samsung and they undercut on pricing what is the point? It seems to me Samsung's success is at the expense of Sony.

Re: Sony Denies Giving up on OLED

Are you sure you aren't talking about what they call LED TV - which is really and LCD with LED backlighting? And which isn't OLED at all.

Re: Sony Denies Giving up on OLED

Yes, I've seen the Sony OLED XEL-1 TV on display at Sony Centre, London W1 (Tottenham Court Road). It really isn't much larger than a 13 inch portable. The visible screen size is only 11 inches.

They have already produced some OLED displays for a Minidisc Walkman, and I think one of the latest Naim Hifi designs has an mono OLED panel on the front, not sure who made it though.

Re: Sony Denies Giving up on OLED

Samsung are massive, they even build liquid gas supertankers. Saw a documentary on Discovery.

Pity they couldn't make dvd recorders though.

Re: Sony Denies Giving up on OLED

From what I understood Sony put on hold the development of OLED TV because of the economic conditions. Sony hasn' t been doing well in the market lately having huge loses for years. So they probably cut the team developing OLED, and kept some members specially those working the blue LED problem.
Samsung and LG are coming strong in this market. LG even promised a 'giant' 32" (81cm for non UK or US citizens) OLED TV in 2012 source. They did this to beat the 30" one that Samsung announce. I think that the Korreans are trying to steal the shine from the Japanese firms and each other.
The Sony Samsung venture probably refers to the sharing of Chinese manufacturing facilities and some sharing of tehnologies. I haven' t heard of a deal between them. LG on the other hand had ties with Philips and a Japanese company (don' t know which).
From what I know Chinese firms make some of the pieces: motherboard, transistors, tube. While other pieces: tuner, current regulating are made in Korrea or Japan (in Samsung that' s how the labels show). The TVs are assembled in: Polland (Samsung), Czech Rep (Sony and other Japanese firm), Hungary (both and LG).
