I'm in the market for a new 50" display, but should I wait.

I am looking at upgrading my current tv to a 50" 1080p set. I was looking at Pioneer sometime later this year, but with recent news on that front and some rumours of new technologies being ready as early as next year I'm wandering if I should wait.

Obviously if I'm going to go Pioneer I need to get on with it, but I wandering if I should let it go and wait a bit longer. What do you think the general consensus would be for me on this one?

I would like to upgrade this year but if OLED or whatever is going to be even better . . . . . . .

Next year's stuff will be better (but without Pioneer) but because of the falling value of the pound it will probably be dearer

There are those that say buy Pioneer now while they are still around, but that raises all sorts of parts and warranty concerns

Retailers are desperate for customers just now and if you are prepared to haggle hard (even over a number of days) and find something that you like, why not go for it now

There are some good 50" jobbies around

Useable OLED devices are likely to be 2 to 3 years away at least. Buy a Kuro while they last.

Hi,

Next year's Panasonic NEO-PDP-ECO's sound extremely promising indeed if you can wait that long!

Suave!

Re: I'm in the market for a new 50" display, but should I wait.

I am getting a 50" panasonic pz80b delivered Tuesday for £999 with a 5yr warranty from JL, second best brand to a Kuro and with no hassle for 5yrs.

It's always best to go with tried and tested technology, its safer and value for money. You only have to look through the various plasma and LCD threads to see that almost every make and model have some sort of fault (and this is technology thats been around for years now)

Personaly would stear clear of OLED until its been out for at least a year, and then check on here if there are any bugs

Re: I'm in the market for a new 50" display, but should I wait.

Honestly, I saw all the offerings at this year's CES and the ONLY standout for me were the new Samsung LCD's - they are awesome!! (I work from a speaker manufacturer so no bias on my part!)

There will be a 6000, 7000 and 8000 series using individual LED backlighting, parked next to their "standard" LCD's they were leagues ahead. Only 3cm deep with true black and brighter, though not overblown colours I really could see no fault with them - admittedly they were showing the slow hi-def demo's so I couldn't tell how they'd handle motion. The only differences in the ranges are features so if you go for a 6000 series they shouldn't be expensive. Due out first half 2009 from what I could tell.

I have a Panasonic 700lxd 32" which I'm very impressed with but these made me think about upgrading already, I don't see why anyone would wait for the OLED's - I saw Sony had larger ones on show (maybe 19-20") but again miles off reality and costly, the LCD's Samsung had (the other brands had nothing I'd rave about to be honest) were close enough in quality for my liking.

Re: I'm in the market for a new 50" display, but should I wait.

I agree with you Jimrod. I'm weighing up whether to buy a new Samsung LED backlit 46" LCD.

Given that Samsung makes all of the Sony LCD tvs at the S-LCD plant in Korea, is it likely that there will soon be a Sony variant of this technology?

I know people think S-LCD is a joint Sony/Samsung venture, but I've been there and every worker is employed by Samsung, has that badge on their overalls etc.

I'm asking because I have fond memories of Sony, when it was master of its game. I'd prefer to look at that badge in my lounge.

in LCD field best pannels comes from Philips during last few years,

but last year models(**PFL9**3*) were litlebit owerpriced

wait for this year models(**PFL9**4*)
http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-t...64-9704-a.html

Philips **PFL9704* will have 5k static contrast(5 000 000 Dinamic)
