NEWB Q: What's OLED and FLCD?

Hi guys! So probably some of you have seen me posting new threads, thinking omg, what a 'newb', but i'm just trying to learn, and just got pretty into this whole blogging scene!

I want to apologize in advance for the people I annoy or frustrate with these technology stupid threads or comments! But I tend to be a moderate learner, so I hope to pick these things on fast!

ANYWAY! TO MY QUESTION!

1) What is OLED? I know it's Organic Liquid E (.....not sure) Display. But what's the difference between LED and OLED?

2) And what is FLCD?

Anyone who has a little time and wants to help out a beginner may feel free to comment

THANKS GUYS!

OLED - Organic Light Emitting Diode

FLCD - Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Display

I'm not an expert, but check out the following for a bit more information.

Ohhhhh... thanks Stuart JB = D

But, what's the difference between the 2!?

Which one would you recommend?

And what's the diff between OLED and normal LED? Or are they totally different?

Re: NEWB Q: What's OLED and FLCD?

An Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) is any Light Emitting Diode (LED) whose emissive electroluminescent layer is composed of a film of organic compounds.

I don't think it would be case of what to reccomend, if these technologies come to market you would look at what you want to buy and see what is the best at the time for your budget.

If you take Plasmas and LCDs, some manufacturers make great plasmas and others make great LCDs. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, it depends upon the manufacturers implementation at that time.

Re: NEWB Q: What's OLED and FLCD?

I have never heard of a "LED monitor" - only a LED backlit monitor .
LED backlighting is supposed to be better than the normal fluorescent (CCFL = cold cathode fluorescent lit) backlighting in terms of faster response time and wider colour gamut.

Yeah, the only consumer devices to use LEDs at the moment are actually LCD displays which use a fairly small number of white LEDs instead of a regular fluorescent lamp as their light source. The bit that determines what colour any given pixel is, is the LCD panel, same as in a regular LCD screen.

I think some of the very large displays you see mounted on the outside of buildings (e.g. at Picadilly Circus) may use regular LEDs, but I'm not sure.

Re: NEWB Q: What's OLED and FLCD?

Yes, some giant displays do this (hadn't included those because they are irrelevant for normal consumers); in those cases there is a physical pixel size or area large enough for that be viable.

Re: NEWB Q: What's OLED and FLCD?

Bigntall,

if you are here because you are considering either of these TV formats to purchase then I would suggest you choose an LCD or plasma mate.

If you're just here for curiosity, then I apologize so fire away!

OLEDs, as great as they are, still are relatively new, I think only Sony have a model out (11" screen - not quite a living room filler to be honest) and they are still expensive. Maybe in ten years they will be the new LCD.

FLCD I have no idea about either.

Re: NEWB Q: What's OLED and FLCD?

Wow thanks for all the info guys!

And rafpilotdavid, I am looking for a new TV monitor! I'm also looking for a new computer monitor. Money of course is a big issue. And I'm in no hurry to buy new monitors/TV screens. But would like to learn a lot more about them before-hand than actually going out and buying a new display screen to become another unsatisfied customer = /

So yeah... here to LEARN! hahaha.

And no don't worry I won't get offended or anything. I'm more worried about offending others for my lack of knowledge about technology AHhaha.

Anyway, so yeah any recommendations about TV display screens for the living room would be nice = )
