2010 football world cup less likely, or 2012 london olympics more likely.
Advantages are; better colours, better contrast, nice and bright, no flicker, under 42" full hd,

I do believe an OLED panel is much less fragile than LCD Great if you've got kids who insist on pushing their little fingers against the screen

Under 42" full HD is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of unless you going to be sitting about 1.5 meters away max

I broke my 37" Toshiba 1080p set, and I am now watching on a 32" Samsung 720p set until I get a new TV.

Part of it may be down to the particular sets, but I can see quite a difference when watching Blu Ray. Both in terms of detail and sharpness. Scaling a 1080 image to 720 is going to have an effect on detail and sharpness, so it may not be purely down to the number of pixels my eyes can see.

I am watching from a little over 2 metres.

Not to mention the practical advantages like paper-thin screen, 40% power consumption of current HDTVs and I believe they are more rigid than LCD or Plasma. As someone has said; better for kids running around it ha. Though my first act if I were to buy one wouldn't be to test it out by dropping it down the stairs. But you get the idea. OLED >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Any current HDTV.

Re: Samsung displays 40 in OLED 1080p

oh my god, thats all i thought when i went into comet today and saw this samsung tv. i just cant get over the difference in the picture compared to the lcd or plasma's. ok yeh its like a fag paper depth to it but i was so suprised when the sales chap came over and said nice innit. honest to god i thought i was watching a blu-ray and when he said no its just a dvd i just coudlnt belive him, so he got the disc out and it was a old dvd scratched to hell and only playing on a upscaler.
yep there expensive but not as bad as i thought it would be comming in at £1600 in comet ( ive found them in a quick scan for £1268 online) i thought wasnt to bad for this new tech.
i think im still in shock to be honest and i cant say i was like that when we had hd installed, so i really am fussy and hard to please to be honest, but this just blew me away big time.

Re: Samsung displays 40 in OLED 1080p

If it's the SAMSUNG UE40B7020WWXXU, then it's still an LCD TV.
It uses LEDs to backlight the set.
This is not a OLED screen, but will certainly help the LCD panel to look its best.
Thought it was strange that Samsung would be releasing an OLED screen so soon after announcing no OLED for 2009.

Re: Samsung displays 40 in OLED 1080p

Thanks Paul.

I've just looked at the 40" and 46" versions of the Samsung you quoted.

I was shocked at the depth of contrast ie blacks are really black, whites are brilliant white. Also by the thickness of the panel. Less than 10mm thick, probably due to the absence of a backlight.

I intended to come home, research here, and then buy the 46" for around £1900.

Now I reckon I'll wait, as it's not OLED but merely as described above.

I'm grateful.

I saw this TV in Comet today and was also very impressed. I'm not sure that it really matters that it was not actually OLED.

It was head and shoulders above all other sets in the store. So at the moment I'd say Samsung have got pretty much the best flat screen panel on the market.

It was v nice.

Re: Samsung displays 40 in OLED 1080p

Is this another "opportunity" that has been noticed by another manufacturer to pull the wool over our eyes with regards to an excellent technology that is OLED by selling us a "halfway house" technology which is LED backlit? (remember lots of people "not in the know" were sold "HD Ready" TVs only to find out recently there is also "Full HD" and theirs cannot do 1080? )

So this is and LCD with backlit LED ?
has it got anything in common with OLED?

And what is the contrast ratio ? all I see on Samsung's site is "Mega contrast ratio" , now seeing as OLED will have at least 1,000,000:1 Contrast ratio, does calling this model "Mega" allow them to hide the fact it has way less than 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio ?
or has it really got a very high ratio?

all the above are questions ,not opinions,so replies welcomed

Re: Samsung displays 40 in OLED 1080p

But that all doesnt deny the fact that these Samsung LED backlit TV are great in our eyes. Your technical, theoretical and scientific differences with OLED or whatever are not really necessary in television. Whats important is the perception of the eye, If a great technology can not fool the eye into believeing its 'awesome' what use is it? But if the UE series from Samsung do the trick, and we can all clearly see the difference btwn the conventional LCDs/Plasmas and these 'LED' Tvs, then lets give credit to them.

If OLED is fragile they'll probably put a glass screen in front of it.

Yeah, after watching Sky on my LCD and seeing a CRT the other day for the first time in a while I've got to say CRTs hide the imperfections in digital compression very well... Surprisingly well.

Isn't it that CRTs display the broadcast signal and LCDs have problems?

Despite each manufacturer having some fancy new feature that claims to improve the picture.

Shimmering around objects and inability to displaying moving pictures is due to the poor techology in LCDs, it's not broadcast like that.

This forum (and thread) is about OLED TVs. Not how good or bad CRTs and/or digital TV transmissions are. Can we revert to topic, please?
