New Sony OLED TV due soon(ish)...

Seen in the UK trade press this week:

New Sony TV to be launched extending the "Z" range:
  • 200 Hz
  • OLED
  • WiFi connecting the electronics and logic components to the screen, so the screen is extra light.
  • 1,000,000:1 claimed

Is this the first of the "component" TVs ? We can upgrade the display OR the logic/tuner module separately?

Watching the space for a date and a price... Willing to review if you want to loan me one?

I think you will find the Z range is LED backlit, not an OLED set.

Re: New Sony OLED TV due soon(ish)...

ZX series is an LED backlight, the same as the new X series.

Seperate tuner module which is wireless is correct, as far as I know there is going to be no other tuner you can "upgrade" to - can't really see what the point would be.

Only available in 40 inch.

Screen is 9mm thick at the thinnest point.

Can not wait to get ours in at my Sony Centre soon!

I've seen this today at the Grand Designs show @ NEC. Very impressive!! The 11" OLED tv was there aswell which was pretty spectacular but tiny.

Re: New Sony OLED TV due soon(ish)...

Ok, maybe this has been discussed before but can anyone see the point in the 11" OLED screen. I mean other than as a proof of concept. Why even try to sell it. What is the current market for 11" screens other than in car entertainment and laptop screens, and I'm sure neither market will welcome a £2k ish product. I could understand it if it was a very expensive stylish 32" or above but at 11" the money:sense ratio must be seriously skewed towards the money side. Is it just me? I just don't get it.

You vastly underestimate just how many people have more money than sense.

I thought it was only a grand the 11".

Can't wait for them to get to decent sizes.

Could be £1k, saw the 11" one at the Home Entertainment Show in Manchester on Saturday and the Sony rep there thought £2k. Now technically I thought it really very good but the design was, shall we say, less than elegant. What I still don't get though is why sell an 11" version? Sure show it off, but let us have the 26" one for the money>sense brigade. Surely there should have been a conversation at sony along the lines of "yes the proof of concept works, people like it, now don't come back until you have made a real sized telly"

At the time the 11" product launched in japan, they hadn't yet figured out how to make a 26" version. Besides, small sells: look how many people buy Bose speakers.

Small may sell but how many 11" tv sets is there a current market for, and at least with the bose speakers you can be over a foot away from them and still make use of them!

don't get me wrong, I like the look of the tech and would love to see it on a larger scale in the future, just don't know why they would bother launching it in such a small TV and by the admissions of the sony rep, they certainly didn't think it was going to sell well.

Re: New Sony OLED TV due soon(ish)...

We seen to have two threads running about OLED. Can we get them combined please?
What do we know about other manufacturers and OLED? Is this a technology we can expect to see from everyone or are we possibly beginning another 'war' with a slightly different OLED spec. from others waiting in the wings?
Has anyone seem anything yet about larger screen sizes?
