what has happened to SED?

it seemed like such a promising technology, but all of a sudden i havent heard anything about it in a while..

what has happened? have canon stopped supporting the project? seems a shame not only because it would certainly be better than todays technologies, but also for the amount of money they put into it

anyone has any news about it?

I don't know exactly, but I presume its dead because Canon and Toshiba were at war over patents over the SED technology, and also because I think they are turning to OLED now.

Its a shame because SED showed serious promise as it borrowed CRT technology. I think Laser TV is also dead as well for that matter.

Jason.

Re: what has happened to SED?

SED is looking distinctly dead.

For a couple of years it was looking very promising, but the price of LCD and plasma kept coming down so fast that they couldn't figure out a way of making SED screens cheaply enough that they could be sold at a profit.

Then there was the lawsuit, the end result of which was that Toshiba withdrew from SED entirely. Canon said they were going to carry on developing it alone, but since then there's been little but an ominous silence.

If I were a betting man I would put money on there never being a commercial SED product, now. I think its time has come and gone. By the time it could be with us OLED will have taken over the high end and LCD will so cheap there will no space left at the low end.

Re: what has happened to SED?

The most recent reference I can find to SED:

http://www.sed-tv-reviews.com/

which links to:

http://donpatent.blogspot.com/2008/0...patent-is.html

Quote:
Canon has a reissue patent covering SED TV technology. United States Patent RE40,062 was reissued February 12, 2008. It apparently has some modifications from previous SED TV patents. This may be the beginning of Canon’s attempt to produce SED panels without using the Nano-Proprietary patented technology.
But I wouldn't get your hopes up for a commercial product any time soon; at best this means Canon has gone all the way back to the basic research stage.

Re: what has happened to SED?

this is good news, my guess is we'll see SEDs for post production use within a couple of years. Consumer tvs seem to be a unlikely though

Canon wins SED lawsuit, can produce SED displays again

It's been a while since we've heard about Canon's legal troubles with SED, but it sounds like things are taking a turn for the better -- the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last week that Canon had not broken its contract with Nano-Proprietary (now called Applied Nanotech Holdings) since Canon is now the sole owner of its previous joint venture with Toshiba, SED Inc. The court also reinstated Canon's license to the SED tech, but since Canon stopped working on the tech last year, it'll probably be a while before we see any SED displays actually show up. We'll see how it goes down -- hopefully those rumors of a skunkworks SED project inside Canon will make this all seem like a bad dream someday.

Re: what has happened to SED?

SED will never Succeed!
I think of OLED as BLU-RAY
and SED as HD-DVD... (I’m sure you know the outcome of that!)

Poor Toshiba, they don’t seem to be getting it right these days!

Canon will never be able to get SED out to the market. IE: you walking into curry’s / Dixons and buying one

Canon need someone like Toshiba on their side...

Personally, I have actually seen OLED. It is pretty amazing, so bright and colourful. It's a much better technology, give it 5 years of further tweaking and development and I guarantee even your Nan will have one!!!!

Re: what has happened to SED?

i'm a bit late but here is the news.....
canon were forced to buy toshiba out of the canon/toshiba sed joint venture when nano tech threatened to sue as they only licenced the patent to canon alone not toshiba /canon.
canon have continued to work on the technology as it was at a pre production stage.
anyone who saw the prototypes were blown away as it wiped the floor with both lcd and plasma.it doubtless would have been expensive to begin with but it seems the panels them selves were as cheap to produce as lcd.
in fact toshcan had spent 500 million yen on production facilities to hit the ground running.
maybe its still a runner who knows
