11" Sony OLED tv out in December

Only the 11" model, and Japan - but still. Good sign of things moving quicker than we initially thought.

how are they going to get the power pack away from the screen?
will it eventually become a 2 parter?

Re: 11" Sony OLED tv out in December

Well realistically they won't be that thin for consumer use, I would imagine they will be something like current LCDs (maybe a bit thinner) - otherwise no insurace company would cover them, they would be forever getting smashed.

It's more the better PQ than the "thinness" that interests me.

Re: 11" Sony OLED tv out in December

The future is definately OLED. I think you will see it used on amazingly thin material. Imagine the possibilities - who would need a bulky, noisy projector if you could have a tab tensioned drop down Oled screen of the same size, instead of a screen & pj ? Roll on 5 to 10 years time!

£850 for an 11" screen with a resolution of 940x540? Hmm. Not sure too many people will buy one of those.

As said - a technology for the future but it still look 2/3 years off something the public would look at buying. With the prices of LCDs/Plasmas coming down so much recently they are going to have to be A LOT better to justify a much higher price.

It's the very first commercial product. The first LCD monitors cost £thousands for a simialr screen size. The manufacturing process for OLED is, potentially much cheaper than LCD or Plasma.

If this commercial proof of concept works and the technology is licensed, economies of scale will soon kick in.

I look forward to replacing my LCD tv in 5 years time with one of these.

The Beeb News website has a short piece and even a video on the new screens:

New 105" screen sets new record for size.

Cool Re: 11" Sony OLED tv out in December

Hiya,

I'm going to Japan this december/January. Anyone out there with a fat wallet want me to bring them one(OLED TV!)! I'll charge a small percentage for carrying it over!

Just kiddin!

I did see 46 inch TVs, Sony Bravia, for about £1200.00 last year, it was like £3k here! And an older model! They do seem to move a little faster there!

Terrestrial is HD aswell! SD is still used, but most of these channels are on HD aswell!

Not sure what to get this time round there! Got my PS3, Ipod, games, accessories etc...... last year! The pound was mighty strong last year! About 10-15% stronger than usual! Goes along way!

I cannot wait to get oneof these on say a 70 inch for say, £2k in, I hope 3-5 years, more 3 years! Well, its not too far off!

Re: 11" Sony OLED tv out in December

Why? Early adopters enjoy the weakest technology, the shortest lifespan and the greatest depreciation. A year or two down the road it will seem massively overpriced, clunky and tired. Those who wait will enjoy proven technology built on firm experience. Streamlining of advanced 2nd or 3rd generation production will offer better refresh rates, higher resolution and increased brightness and contrast. Not to mention greatly reduced prices and advanced onboard features.

who cares when your not paying and it means you can ditch a clunky crt monitor? and when it is improved in x years, we will buy more
