I think everyone probably recognises that Plasma and LCD are '1st generation' devices and that at some point newer technology will replace them. I've seen all the alternatives, and they all look good, but they're all plagued with some problems that mean we're not likely to see them soon.

However, I'm hearing strong rumours that Sanyo may be about to come to market with large screen TDEL displays. Of course this industry is full of speculation, but there are several things that point to this not being far off the mark. For instance Sanyo didn't display a single flat screen display at CES, and they're buying Quanta with a press release that says they're doing it to bring to market new revolutionary flat screen displays.

These have been arounf for a while. Iirc there was a company called iFire that were planning to bring a 34" model to the market for $1,000 in 2007. Obviously that time line has been revised although I've not heard much about these recently.

I work as an FPGA designer, and there definitely seemed to be something afoot somewhere, with some new reference designs appearing, but as I said in my first post it will probably come to nothing again. All these technologies seem to be struggling moving from the prototype to production. And if IFire was ready for the big time, I'm sure they'd be shouting from the rooftops.

TDEL/OLED/FLED all of them are getting lots of press and not much more Plasma and LCD took long periods of time in development and started at a huge price £12k for a 42 SD plasma with poor pic and huge cooling fans but they a had a huge market advantage! the were flat, when other technologies come along they have to offer more than being flat we have flat and no one is going to pay more money for a lesser quality (LCD owners apart) just becuase its flat (unless it wears a B&O badge) so what can they offer? Pasma and LCd are still both developig and falling in price which will seriously stagnate the development of competeing technology the growth will proably come from none video display applications lower cost and lower power consmption are attractive quantities.

LCD and Plasma are certainly becoming better, but I believe that a second generation technology will eventually take over this space. I'm hoping for TDEL being a Canadian, but Sony seems to be advancing on OLED faster than anticipated.
