31" LG OLED prototype

LG's 31-inch OLED prototype to slice through IFA -- Engadget

Please let this tech take off and be cheap as chips, as big as plasma and thin as paper, so I can wallpaper one onto my wall. Amen.

31" is too small for me, but do we know if this is finally going to be th e technology that replaces plasma and when are we likley to get plasma type screen sizes at reasonable prices. 2012 or too optimistic?

Anyone have any thoughts?

according to one link these screens are going to cost about £6000 and available march next year so i doubt it will be 2012 when we have large screen sizes at cheaper prices.

The ~5G fabs that are coming online next year are more suitable for sizes smaller than 32". Samsung could manufacture a few ~55" panels just for show though. Manufacturers need ~8G fabs for cheapish 50"+ panels, so 2012 might be a bit too optimistic. 2013-2014.

I'd be tempted with an 42"-46" Oled anywhere between £2000 to £3000

I was wondering if it was worth holding out replacing my current tv for a year to 18 months, but probably not by the sounds of it.

You have a reasonable budget that might buy a 40"+ model in 2012. Some competition from Samsung or Sony could bring down prices.

Competition is inevitable and may come sooner than you think. Samsung had already displayed a 40" prototype in 2008.

I suppose with 3d being the big thing at the moment there isn't really a need for a manufacturers to invest millions in a new technology.

Obviously the manufactures objective is to try and make you buy a new set every year, every other year adn I guess they rely on 3d to achieve this for a few years.

Hats off to LG for really getting behind the OLED band wagon. Sony started the fuss about the tech but of late have gone quiet, it seems only LG are making big moves to get OLED TV's on the market. Obviously SOny and Samsung etc...don't feel the time is right to start promoting OLED yet.

LG were the only company that was pushing OLED at IFA, so that tells you everything you need to know as to how things will pan out over the next year. Will be interesting to see what is shown at CES in January.

Well Samsung has been inspired by LGs boldness. Fair play LG, keep on inspiring them all.

Samsung inspired by LG Display's boldness

However..

"It's too premature to commercialize TVs with organic LED or organic LED (OLED) panels due to strong price resistance. Consumers will not buy it without affordable prices, leaving small room for greater marketability," said Yoon.

Yoon don't forget the trend-setting early adopters on these forums who will fork out big money for OLED quality in their living room.

It's a bit worrying that all the demos show cartoons.

Back in the late 90's / early 2000's it was exactly the same with plasmas. All the demos only ever showed cartoons. The reason was because the number of greyscale steps was not high enough and therefore you got horrible posterisation on things like skin tones and blue skies. Cartoons - with much flatter colours - hid the problem.

Makes you wonder why all the OLED demos are of cartoons?

Wouldn't be at all worried, I know What Hi-Fi or one of those reviewed the 15" OLED and fed it loads of material..the only real problem was the price. Its common for the latest sets to be fed animations as they tick all the boxes..sharp, bright, colourful, and entice families with kids to part with their hard earned so little Johnny can watch Monsters and Aliens having a barney.

Mine is 6 years. Am kind of close to getting a 55" all whistle LCD but can't quite bring myself to do it. Crappy off center viewing, but mostly motion blur despite all hundreds of Hz'es of motion magic applied, make me hesitate. An OLED of at least 46" would get my vote right here and I would be willing to spend 3.5k on it, now.

Yeah the wife wouln't look too kindly on me getting a new TV, with the old one 'perfect as it is'! If I was able to get one now I wouldn't mind the LG 50PK590 or something 50". Not sure about 3D the depth looks great though, but so many TVs at the moment seem less than perfect. OLED will blow us all away, hopefully. Maybe in a few years a glasses-free (sit rigidly centre as possible) 50" OLED will be in my living room.

Hi

OLED still has a few issues, reminiscent really of Plasma TVs. They draw more power displaying bright pictures, maybe as much as three times that of an LCD TV! There is also issues with burn-in and uneven ageing causing a colour shift over time as Blue OLEDs age much quicker.

So probably worth staying with what you have or a different technology for a while yet until the prices come way down or OLEDs become much more robust.

Regards

Phil

While it is awesome that the TV is so thin, given that the actual TV screen won't have any connection ports on it cause of the increased size that would be needed for all the sockets, having it with a base unit is going to be a requirement, and if it has to be on a base which is 20cm or whatever deep, will we actually get any benefit in terms of saved space etc, from having such a thin screen?

There's nothing to stop the manufacturers from providing the panels with a separate media box, with just a single cable connecting the two. Like the Pioneer KRP Kuro plasmas for example. That's what I have - and I have buried the cable in the wall, so all you see is the plasma on the wall and no connections anywhere. Trouble is, mine is about 2" thick. If it was an OLED and maybe only 5mm thick it would look even better.
