Re: How often do you go to the cinema?

I used to go quite a bit (2-3x a month) when courting as while even being picky about picture quality it wasnt the reason i was at the cinema

i went to watch PotC3 and the picture was awful, an out of focus and dull blurry mess (bulb hadnt been changed since the cinema was built no doubt! and this is an Odeon Cinema)

that really put me off going to the cinema, but i recently decided to give it another chance and watch indy 4. while i enjoyed the film the picture was still crap. so even though i havent got my projector set up yet id still rather watch it on my MUCH better plasma

Re: How often do you go to the cinema?

I've been to the Cinema 3 times

in 1984 to watch Ghostbusters

in 1986 to watch Labyrinth and Enemy Mine

and thats it.....

I nearly had a chance in 1989 to watch Ghostbusters 2

and in 2004 nearly had a chance to watch I Robot

so it been a while, 22 yrs

Not usually the reason for the blurriness - probably just out of focus - the lamps tend to be changed when need be (as they go off with an enormous bang if they aren't) and not before as they are not cheap either.

Re: How often do you go to the cinema?

Wow, havent logged in for ages. Great topic and i'd like to comment. I work as a projectionist for a small chain. It's such a shame that high prices and the comforts of home cinema have kept so many people indoors. Where I work, the rooms are small and quirky but as a result, the image is lovely and bright and if the film print is a decent one, the image quality superb. Even compared to dvd; the rich, colour depth and definition is often much better than dvd. Now of course, it's all down to personal taste but I prefer rich colours on the big sceen than upscaled resolutions but that's just me. When my cinema showed Deja Vu, the picture quality was jaw dropping and that's on a standard 35mm print.

Many of you have commented on having out of focus experiences and I hope you complained. As a projectionist, I take pride in trying to give the best experience to the customer and would want to know a.s.a.p if something is not right with the film (assuming I had not spotted the problem first). I expect a good picture and sound and always make my comments known to the cinema if it's not satisfctory. And if someone is making lots of noise, if you feel comfortable or safe to do so, I would complain too. Why let some idiot ruin the experience. Mutiplexes may offer huge screens and lots of rooms but they are clinical and cold with over worked staff who fail (or are not trained) to make checks for problems during presentations. In some ways Multiplexes are part of the big cause of peope staying at home and waiting for the dvd. A real shame.

Chris.

Re: How often do you go to the cinema?

I don't go very often, specifically because of people eating, nothing else.
Honestly, what is wrong with some people that they can't go two hours without eating?
I was heartened by a report last week that said one of the smaller cinema chains is introducing food-free showings.
I'd like to think the big chains will follow suit, but given that their mark-up on popcorn is such that a £3.50 tub costs them £0.07, I doubt it...
I do notice some of the films being out of focus too, by the way.
Although it is very firmly the food issue that stops me going more often.
If I do want to see a film, I try and go to a weekday showing, early/mid morning.
Less people and certainly less chance of people eating popcorn.

My local Odeon also has a bar for it's Deluxe screen so can enjoy a bevvy with the movie and as I had a curry before going flicks last night I might've indulged in a little bit of PAAARPING during movie too, lucky it was a loud movie

Re: How often do you go to the cinema?

I now visit the cinema rarely. Had too many disappointing visits. Last saw Mission Impossible 3, but screen was very much out of focus, so I complained - (3 times during the showing) and each time they either failed to rectify the problem or only made it margainly better.

The sound at our local cinema (a big 9-screen odeon) is good, but I've been very disappointed at the screen focus and general picture quality.

I feel we've been charged a big premium for many years now and they've taken the money but it seems they've not ploughed any back into better equipment.

Our local must have made an absolute killing over the years. It's been open for not far off 20 and probably with the same equipment. It was great at the time but badly needs updating to get any value from the ticket price (Standard adult price of £7.30 before even getting onto the popcorn and drinks prices)

Dan.

I've been to that cinema at Hatfield Galleria a couple of times, think the last time was for Sin City. Remember it being in a rather parlous state as there were dozens of seats with bin bags over them for some reason! The sound system was rather good though- the fact that it has the old fashioned sloped floor, rather than stadium seating, might help with acoustics?

If you haven't been already then i highly recommend a trip to The Rex Cinema - Berkhamsted I try and get over there as often as i can as it's much better set-up than my local Odeon and the tickets and drinks are cheaper too

Wow, had a ready of that article and sounds really good. I have friends in Hemel so we might give this a go at some point and make a night of it. Thanks!

Re: How often do you go to the cinema?

Finally went to the cinema to see TDK. The last time I went was to see King Kong. Glad I saw it on the big screen but can't see me going back that often.

Luckily given how long it's been out apart from us there were only 3 other people in the whole screening. No loud kids, it almost felt like a private viewing!

Re: How often do you go to the cinema?

We have Cineworld and Odeon multiplexes close by and they both do kid/family film deals on a Saturday/Sunday morning. £5 for the three of us! Consequently, we go up to a couple of times a month.

Re: How often do you go to the cinema?

I have not been to one for over five years now.
Think the last movie I saw was star trek nemesis.

I find the prices are very high now.
Also our one is very small and only has 2 screens.
