Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I havn't got anything to play back BluRay and will remain that way until a properly specified player arrives.

I need to be able to play:
SACD & DVD-A
Multiregion Standard DVDs

Multi-region BD playback would be nice but isn't a deal breaker like not being able to play discs I already own. Startup needs to be under 30 seconds. When that's around I wouldn't mind spending up to about £400.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I dont have a Bluray player at present, but do have 20 BD films, ready for when I get one.

Funny enough with the cheapness of the Toshiba Ep30 and HD films, I now have the player and about 10 HD movies. Simply because they are so cheap.

Both HDDVD and Blu-ray. Sad about the HDDVD demise but still an excellent upscaling DVD player.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I went looking for a blu-ray player last week, came away disapointed by all the on-going confusion of standards. I'll be waiting a bit longer for them to sort it all out.

I am frustrated, but also pleased I didn't buy anything last year, just have to wait a couple more months until Blu-ray is finally stable. Upscaled SD dvds still look pretty good, there's no rush.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

Don't have Blue-ray
I wait for the studios to stop taking mickey with the pricing of the BR discs.
There is no 5-7 pounds difference in cost between making normal DVD and Blue-ray disc
But at the moment I’m tempted to go for cheap Toshiba and HD films.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I have a US Sony BDP-S300 to cover Blu-ray (40+ and growing daily!) and a multi-regioned Toshiba HD-XE1 to cover HD DVD (30+ and growing daily!) and SD DVD (1000+) - on which the upscaling is excellent. I really have no preference and love both formats and am quite happy with the Sony until the BDP-S550 is released later this year.

I have to agree here. IMO, for the money you pay, it is a great piece of equipment and like a lot of things in life, if you keep waiting for that 'perfect' upgrade, you will never buy anything. Like maps, as soon as they're produced, they're out of date!

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

Had Blu-ray since July 06

Originally started with a Region A Samsung BDP1000 and added a Region B PS3 in Jul 07. I upgraded the Samsung with a Sony BDP500 in December 07. Now looking to upgrade to twin (US and UK) Denon 3800 players - although if I have any sense (which I don't) I'll hold out until next year for a Profile 2.0 enabled model.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I will wait until the catalog of films available on Blu-ray is much greater, and the prices have dropped significantly.

I currently have 7 HD-DVD films and am in general happy with the PQ, but on my display (42" plasma viewed from approx. 8 ft.) the quality is not dramatically better than good SD-DVDs.

Another reason for me to wait with Blu-Ray is judder: this has proven to be a nuisance with at least several of my HD-DVDs. My understanding is that as long as the display does not support 24fps (by "support" I mean capability of displaying at that frame rate, not just accepting a signal and transforming it internally), judder will be a problem with many films on Blu-Ray.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I have a PS3 and x2 Tosh EP30 HD DVD players. I like Blu-ray and bought my PS3 in May 07, but bought into HD DVD back in Sept 06. So I have a much bigger HD DVD library, swelled massively by the recent firesales! I've got so many HD DVDs to watch that I don't intend to buy a new Blu-ray disc for months now!

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I own a PS3 , and an XE1 but am just building a high end 'uber' PC and toying with the idea of buying a decent combi optical drive to play both formats.
The PS3 does what it says on the tin and the XE1 is the best up scaler I have ever seen so nothing is defunct as yet!!
The future may be in Downloading and streaming eventually but until that day its a buyers market!

I have a sony FZ21z laptop with blu ray burner and a HD DVD EP30

The laptop gives sound and picture over HDMI and is really good - great fast laptop to boot

you can get FZ21 - with Blu ray rom only for £500 so at the moment why bother with a standalone - it is v quite (much more so than my EP30!

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

When we had this divide between blu-ray and hddvd i was put off between getting one or the other so when blu-ray won the formats battle i went out and brought a ps3. The funny thing is i brought a hddvd addon for the 360 the following week. Alot of people think one is nuts for going out and getting the hddvd addon and the disks when the format is as dead as the dodo but loads of films that are on hddvd areknocking around and going very cheap compared to what they were. As for Blu-ray the disks could do with being abit cheaper but what i do is buy them keep the few i like watch the ones i don't intend on watching again then sell them on for not much less than you brought them for that way your only losing about as much as it would of cost you to rent it and basically that's what i have done.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

Hi,

I am another HD-DVD owner (Tosh E1), and have gone for a PS3 as my way into Blu-Ray.

This player seems the most future proof so far (the recent announcement of DTS HD MA support being an example). I am also keeping a eye out for Denon's 'universal' HD player, but certainly won't be buying another 'dedicated' stand-alone player until profile 2.0 settles down - not at Denon's prices anyway

Have a PS3 for movies, and a LG Bluray writer that can playback HD-DVDs in the PC, only just fitted it and havn't tried it out yet.
The lad has a PS3 for games, now wondering if I can change it for mine as his is the all singing, all dancing 60Gb model and mine is the cut-down, feature starved 40Gb model
