What do you spend most money on each month?

We're interested in which format gets most of your money and roughly how much.

Re: What do you spend most money on?

I'd say I spend the most on HD DVDs. I occasionally buy a few Blu-rays as well and will seldom purchase a standard DVD, almost always in the form of TV series not available in HD (The Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy). I've bought around 5-10 SD DVDs in the past year, over 30 HD DVDs and about 10 Blu-rays.

I couldn't put a figure on how much I spend each month as it varies but I'd say, on average, it's less than £50 but the past month has been nearer the £100 mark.

I mainly rent or buy Blu-Ray now.

Used to be DVD, but I can't see me buying a DVD again unless it's a real bargain

Blu-rays for me. Would buy a good DVD if I really wanted to watch it though.

Re: What do you spend most money on?

I bought about 1 dvd per week when i first got into dvd about 7 years ago, but stopped buying them once the HD formats were announced.

In them meantime ive been renting through lovefilm.com and find this an excellent service for me. I plan to buy a HD player in the new year and apart from a couple of demo disks, i'll be renting only.

I realised that i dont watch many films more than once and i like having 3 films to chose from every weekend, plus the opportunity to be more experimental with choices (ie rent what Mrs Meltonboy would like as well as my choices).

Re: What do you spend most money on?

I have quite a dvd collection but haven't bought any for almost 12 months now, basically since I got sky hd, which provides me with pretty much all I could want film-wise.
I've got the hd dvd add on for the 360, but the discs at the moment are way over-priced & I certainly don't intend to build a library until they come down to the tenner mark. Honestly, £20-25 for hd/blueray films that are 5, sometimes 10 years old; do they think we're made of money?

Re: What do you spend most money on?

I understand what this polls about but it'd still be nice if you could add a Blu-ray AND HD DVD combined monthly spend for duel format owners out there as an option..

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

Great poll.

I spend nothing on SD DVDs since purchasing my HD-DVD player about six months ago. I tend to buy HD-DVDs from these very forums and then trade them on ..... much better than renting imo - keep them as long as you like and you always have the option to sell at pretty much what you paid - only need to cover the postage.

I sold virtually all of my 100 SD DVDs.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

Of my monthly DVD budget around 90% goes to the high def formats and the remainder to DVD. I aspire to get all my movies in high def these days - thankfully most new movies are normally day and date - but where there is a delay I am perfectly happy to wait. I am still buying DVDs of TV series I don't think will make HD DVD/Bluray for sometime though...Rome Season 2, Battlestar Galactica Season 3 and 24 Season 6 for example.

As for the split between HD DVD and BluRay - it varies - I have more HD DVD in my collection though.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

I don't really feel I can vote as I probably only buy 1 or 2 titles every two months or so. My spending on high-def formats is a lot more conservative than what it was for DVD, I'm trying to only buy titles that I know I'll watch again.

Basically repeating what's been said. I can't vote because I buy roughly the same amount of both Bluray and HD-DVD.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

I mostly buy HD-DVD (don't have a BR player), and just the occasional DVD for TV series (Miami Vice for example). I'm mainly interested in back catalog titles to replace or complement my DVD collection. In that respect for me (so far) HD-DVD is the best format, although saying that, I would love to watch Close Encounters in HD. It seems sooner or later I will have to adopt BluRay as well. Bummer...

My point was that I often don't buy HD movies every month, it's more like once every two or three months at my current rate of purchasing. I only tend to buy new films rather than double/triple dipping on classics I already have.

The Mortgage then car loan and then fuel. My answer to the poll though was £50 or less on DVD as I don't have a HD player of either kind.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

I buy mainly HD DVD's and get the odd TV show on DVD (i.e. The Simpsons).

I don't think I even make it to £50 a month. It's more like 2 HD DVD's a month for me, which would be around £25-£35, saying that this month I bought about 4.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

It usualy changes quite a bit from month to month, some i won't buy any at all, otherwise i'll buy a huge amound i.e. last month i got the whole studio ghibli collection and 2x 3 for £20 from HMV so spend like £100 in a day.
I buy more based on offers than anything else, and always wait for the price to drop from £15+ to the £6-7 mark, but then usualy gorge myself .
So I put £50 or under as thats about right unless there are some fantastic offers on or box sets I want.
As many decent DVD's can be had for the £3-5 mark its quite difficult to get to the £50 mark unless you go crazy, for hi-def stuff £50 is 3 or 4 discs which i'd guess is easy to do.

Having just got the onkyo 875 with a great upscaler I am starting to wonder if the HD discs are that much better! Maybe when i can get decoding Dolby TrueHD etc through HDMI, I'll be calling Toshiba support tomorrow for the latest 2.3 upgrade.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

I vary a lot. A few months back I spent £300 on DVDs, and yet over the past two months I've bought one movie (Hot Fuzz on DVD).

I don't yet have the ability to play HDDVD or BluRay discs though, so none of those yet. I am, however, planning to get a PlayStation 3 soon, for both BluRay-ing and gaming. I *MIGHT* get an Xbox 360 Elite again, however I used to have a Premium one and I wasn't using it all that much. Still...I miss it on our big TV so I probably will later this year / next year depending on the titles that are released.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

I can hardly believe that I'm only the second person to vote "£101 or more on DVDs". I think it's partly because this poll has some weird possible answers. Since I could just as well have answered "£50 or less on BluRay" or "£50 or less on HD-DVD" : maybe one BD every 2 months, and 0 HD-DVD since I don't have a drive .

There doesn't seem to be a VOTING selection for ... A PLAGUE ON BOTH YOUR CAUSES I INTEND TO BUY A DUAL STANDARD MACHINE JUST AS SOON AS THE PRICE OF THESE WONDERFUL WIDGETS DROP TO A SENSIBLE LEVEL .... and in the mean time I'll just live with a decent up-scaling DVD player ... which is what gets MY vote.

Would agree with that.

Ive stopped buying DVD's and have resorted to renting them (the online cheap way). I think I was burned by buying videos before in the 80' early 90's and there are still 200 or so sitting in my parents attic, so am wary of it happening again.

I have a HD DVD player, but any very, very wary of buying any titles as Im convinced they will be a waste of money, especially considering the price of them A perfect example though of me being cautious was that I was in a gamestop store at the weekend and there were 2nd hand HD DVD's on sale and although they were at a great price, the titles were crap. Miami Vice was only 13 euros, but it doesn't matter, it was rubbish - so not buying it. In the past, I would have bought it and added to the "collection"

As I get older and those 2 hours of movie watching is at a premium, no crap is allowed and especially when the money can be spent on a book or onto the next point: watchin TV series.

I have bought TV series on DVD, because the value is great and I prefer watching the long series in my own time and not having to put up with advertisements etc.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

I buy a few HD DVD's a month and have an 8 disc at once subsciption from Lovefilm for all my SD DVD watching, mostly used for TV series.

I'm interested in becoming dual format but I don't think the dual format players about to be released quite cut it, mostly due to the blu-ray profile situation. I'll probably think more carefully about it after CES in the new year.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

I very rarely buy any form of media anymore, I have a blockbuster online rental sub and sky HD. I occasionally buy TV series etc on DVD but am yet to 'splash' out on an HD format player.

Re: What do you spend most money on each month?

I have 3 blu-ray and 4 HD-DVDs and spent about £700 on SkyHD (excluding the hardware) since the launch of HD-DVD.

I expected to spend much more on HD-DVD and Blu-ray, but most of the quality films I want are still not available.

I guess I have watched 60-odd HD movies on SkyHD, though half of those weren't great films.
The 3 or 4 BBC HD films I've seen have been pretty good.
