AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

On the next AVPodcast we will discuss where we are a year on from the main launch of each HD Disc formats and of course Sky HD TV.
We are looking for comments and voting from end users who have, or have not added the new formats to their Home Cinemas.
This is not a discussion on which is better, but rather how the market and end users have voted with their wallets and how popular HD material and Formats are..

Thanks for taking part.

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

My vote has dissappeard

I voted "I own Both formats." and that is in italics and is says I voted, however it is registering no votes on that option.

Started out with HD DVD due to the price of equipment being alot less than that of Blu-ray. When the PS3 came out it gave an affordable entry to Blu-ray.
I plan to get Sky HD but still cant see enough HD material I would watch for price, if Sky were to drop the £10 a month charge my arm could be twisted.

EDIT: My name now appears under those who voted but despite two people voting it is only registering one vote.

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

I am planning on getting Sky HD, but only because the combined TV / Internet / Phone package will work out to be cost effective for us.

It will be the basic 6 mix though, only reason for HD over + is to future proof really, i don't mind an extra £2.50 a week for the basic HD channels.

As for HD players, i will be waiting for either;

a) a winner (unlikely any time soon IMO)
b) a high end dual format player by one of the manufacturers currently sitting it out i.e Arcam / Denon etc.

Currently satisfied with a good DVD player, it does a grand enough job on my size of screen for now.

There is a missing (if wishful thinking) option, which is my preferred option:

Wait until there is just one HD disc format!!!

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

SKY HD seemed best option last year as it was the only practical source of new ( for me anyway)content ie LOST , BSG, 24, LAS VEGAS + BBC's excellent service.

I have just bought a PS3 as on forum advice is currently as good if not better that the stand alone players costing more for BD playback. If neither takes off Ill still have a great games machine. With the more affordable packages coming out for the PS3 I think BD will increase its market share in europe and US mainly due to the dual purpose ability of it.

Denon are just about to release their blu-ray player - but its priced around $2000

http://www.trustedreviews.com/tvs/ne...ayers-Debut/p1

I went with HDDVD add on for Xbox360 (cheap cheap), Sky HD and "other" source - I just wish BBCHD had Dolby 5.1 - Heroes missed that on Wednesday night

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

Truth be told I don't think HD has REALLY taken off for most people - like DVD it will take a while to convince many people.

There just isn't enough content on TV for a start and HD DVD discs will probably have to reduce in price a bit (and players as well).

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

I own both formats, but I am still tentative about buying content for HD DVD and Blu-ray mainly due to price. For the format to really take off, pricing of films needs to be more realistic imo.

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

I'm surprised at the amount of people who just own one format only, especially on here. I personally own both formats as that's currently the only way to cover the HD disc market. Like Tejstar though I only buy essential discs on either HDDVD or Blu Ray, due to cost and still buy loads of DVD's which are now very cheap indeed and often a very good quality once upscaled.

Strangely i've not yet dabbled with Sky HD as I just don't feel that the extra subscription is worth it for what content there is. That said, i'll probably give in soon.

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

No option for the "I tried HD DVD, but reverted back to SD (higher end)", which is what i did. Main reason being that i found some HD titles of a poorer quality than expected, and cost. Once the final format gets sorted i`ll most likely rejoin the HD club once more.

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

I started off with HD DVD because of the cheap 360 add on, I then (whilst drunk one night) bought a PS3 (which I hardly use for games)... so I now buy, what I consider to be, essential discs for each format - I actually don't really have much of a preference between the two and I have been shocked at the poor quality of some titles (Superman II Richard Donner Cut HDDVD version) but then, both formats have seriously impressed me as well!

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

ps3 built blue ray yet to get content for it........ with GW not sure I will pursue blue ray much in that it is a lot of extra resources to add all the bonus content and that standard DVD only uses 20 watts vs the PS3 380 watts.

- I've actually now got Sky HD as well and it's superb! Well worth the tenner a month IMO, just for Sports & Movies alone, let alone the Sky One, BBC, Discovery, History etc. content. The picture is fantastic on the whole and as above, I would never go back and resent having to watch HD stuff now .

Well I have sky HD and a playstation 3 which i guess is classed as a Blueray player, but I have absolutley no intention at all of buying any blue ray disks or any hd disk media until the formats settle down.
Im in no rush.

Regardless of which format wins the war, I'll not be buying either until the disks come down in price. I have a large DVD collection (>500), bought almost entirely at less than £5 per film. Until I can stroll into a choices / blockbuster / hmv retailer and find a selection of 100's of titles for roughly a fiver, I'm not fussed about those extra pixels.

I have a few HD things

HD DVD player (Toshiba HD-XE1 + Xbox 360 HD DVD add on)
Sky HD
Xbox 360
Apple TV

Well the Apple TV can display HD if there is anything in HD other than podcasts and movie trailers.

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

I have both HD DVD and BluRay players and am happily buying discs for both Cost of the discs doesn't bother me in the slightest - imported from the US they are not that much more expensive than a new release DVD - and encoded in 1080p/24 are not likely to be replaced anytime soon. I am being picky as to which titles though - I am very reluctant to buy discs that have no lossless audio.

I have yet to buy an HD Display so don't have the option yet.
Just out of interest does this apply to everyone? I only ask because on some standard def screens the PQ of the new formats (let alone the sound) can be fantastic. I have my 'old' XA1 HD DVD and BDP1000 BluRay players connected to an 'old' Panasonic PW7 (secondary setup) and it looks fantastic.

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

I have all 3 with the latest addition the Tosh HD-DVD (HD-EP10) being added this week.
I've had sky HD for since December 06 and has been worth it just for Back2back Star Wars movies on New Years Day! (Has been a little poor lately since channel reshuffle).
Got the Pana DMP-BD10 Blu-ray Player (with latest firware upgrades for HD Audio Formats etc) Which I have been really happy with despite Cr@ppy remote.
Been holding off HD-DVD, but with Matrix Trilogy out and LOTR Trilogy on the cards, couldn't hold out any longer.

Main Setup -
Pioneer PDP-436XDE, Denon AVR3806, Denon DVD-2910, Panasonic DMP-BD10, Toshiba HD-EP10, X-Box 360, PS3, Wii (It's Her's, Honest)

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

I'm sure a few other people are too...

But i'm waiting for a player from either camp that can play multi region SD discs.. i have a lot of these and don't fancy having to have 2 players, mainly as i only have one HDMI input and dual adaptors are expensive, but also because i just don't have the space for either the player, or another goddamn remote control!!!!!

I am erring toward HD DVD at the moment though..

Re: AVPodcast Poll: HD Formats - what have you done a year on?

I've answered 'only other HD source' as I have the Pace HD Freesat reciever that allows me to watch the BBC HD Preview channel.

Cheers, Dave C.
