Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

the only reason my hi-fi / home cinema is worth more than our car is because the car is now over twelve years old. I have to say that it looks more like four years old because of its condition, and wifey uses it for work.

Its a Honda Concerto which was similar to the Rover 200 series, but only in basic side shape. its engine is a Honda and the interior was quite different plus parts of the exterior differed like the front headlight arrangement and grill. The rear light cluster was also arranged differently and we also have a large rear spoiler which is pretty rare to see now (a) because the power unit is a 1.6i. and (b) because there aren't too many on the road anymore.

Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

My car's worth a lot more than my HC. I use my car every day and drive lots of miles for work. As a result, I spend more time in my car than in front of my HC. As you can see from my signature, my HC isn't exactly top end stuff, but it's good enough for me. So far, I've resisted the upgrade bug, but it's a constant battle that I'm sure I'll lose one day quite soon!

Ive just recently bought a brand new car but its still worth significantly less than what my HC would have cost new (about the same as what its cost me).

Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

Car goes fom A to B and back. Home Entertainment system offers hours of fiddling around with settings.......Oh yes and the odd HD prog, DVD or CD/SACD/DVD-Audio not long to european spec HD-DVD and Blu-ray gimmie expensive toys over sittiing on the worlds largest car park, aka the UK road system. (except Norfolk, apparently, though like many I've never been there....no motorways er um 3 lane car parks)

If you don't want to get involved in any particular discussion/thread, then just ignore it - easy.

I agree the vast majority of these forums are about a/v related topics, but on the odd occasion its no big deal to slightly digress, anyway the subject matter was sort of related......Now how about one about naked ladies draping themselves over hi-fi and a/v equipment...oops musn't be sexist, and for the ladeeez...naked men (i suppose)

Don't have a car. Don't really have a home cinema system either to speak of but that will change soon enough.

What do you give a toss about?

We love our AV ( at home), love our cars( out and about) , ( some car audio costs more than the car itself) and have to spend time in the said cars in order to afford the AV
Sure, there is more to life than AV, Cars, relationships, Jobs, Homes..
And yes.. we all need to go out more but hey ....

Have a break...have a Kit KAT!!

Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

Home Entertainment sytem (main one) - $35,000+ US
Car #1 - '06 VW Passat 3.6L w/ sport 2 - $36,000+ US
Car #2 - '06 VW Passat 2.0t with lux 1 - $29,000+ US

Obviously.....I spend more on the cars. But compared to the population, I spend way more on home entertainment than the average joe.

Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

My car is ancient but still works. I'm lucky that my work-place is within walking distance so it stays in the garage until we need it.

Given a large sum of money I would spend the bulk of it on a home entertainment system and newer car can wait until old faithful has died.

Cars are booooooooooooooring, unless you have at least 60K , back to the AV please. Unless this pole is to include motorcycle as an option.

Tut Tut

Youve obviously not driven an Ariel Atom
My other car is a Passat

Both way more expensive than a £6.5k HC system

What utter rubbish! Have you ever head of TVR? Or Lotus? Or Caterham!!? I could name a dozen cars that are fun to drive for less than 40k of the top of my head. Mind you, I suppose it depends what you mean by boring.

Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

I bought the car 30 years ago and it had 96K on the clock then. I bought the HC over the past 5 years. If we ignore what I've spent on the maintaining the car, the HC wins by a factor of 2.

Hmmm, well I only spent £7.5K on home entertainment but the three cars cost 12 times as much. In fact my house cost less than the cars, when I bought it

It means youve got your priorities sorted

Car: means of transportation ( albeit dashing around with 250bhp on tap looking over ones shoulder for the boys ( and girls) in blue)
Car: sometimes.. something to show off

AV gear: Pleasure all the way , even hedonism sometimes
Av gear: Always a delight to show off!

Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

Until my employees start giving me £700 per month to buy, run and maintain my AV system then I guess my A4 3.2 Convertible will be worth more than my AV stuff...

Of course I could buy a 5 year old Astra and use the £695 left over each month to buy AV stuff.... ...but to be honest, I get pleasure from both

Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

I've had AV systems for years, current one is in the region of just under £20k.

Current car is Volvo S80, £3k. Company Passat, £10k.

Right now I'm looking for another car, some thing that'll make me grin all the time I'm in it. Don't fit TVRs, Caterhams, Ariels, Lotusii.

Currently have a hire Boxster S sitting outside, which I *do* fit

Ok, if I buy one I'll probably loose my license inside a month, but god I love the performance and sound of them! The engine sounds *absolutely* gorgeous from 5k to its red line, and with your foot flat to the floor. Aherm, sorry officers...

Ok, there's too much traffic around nowadays to just go out for a drive for the fun of it, but nothing wrong with having as much fun getting from A to B as you can.

(it still can't come close to the performance of my ex-motorbike though)

Re: Car vs Home Entertainment System

You are probably mistaken if you think you won't fit in a TVR because of height. Former company owner Peter Wheeler was 6' 6" and he ensured that all the cars accommodate him. I've had 911s but the Boxster S does nothing for me, it's just not fast enough for a start.
