Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

It's over a year since the format war was won by Blu-ray and we are interested to know how many of you have invested in Blu-ray since we last ran this poll in May 2008.

Can't see the benefit unless you have 50"+ full HD screen or projector, which I don't!

Oh mate, have you seen one? Get a demo. I have a Full HD 32" TV in my office and it makes a hell of a difference.
It doesn't have to be Full HD, either. Our main home cinema system is 720p. It still looks astonishingly better than DVD.

It still looks much better on 42" and even under, the contrast is also better which gives it a more 3D look. Plus uncomressed sound which TBH isn't a great leap unless you want 7.1
I agrre, even on a 720p is looks fab.

One UK Panasonic BD35
One US Sony S350

both of which look astoundingly better than DVD on a mere 50" Plasma

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I bought the Sony S350 at a bargain price last fall. PQ is noticeably better on my 42" HD-ready plasma. I'm still not happy with the prices and selection of films, but prices have come down a fair amount in the past year.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

PS3 launch model , HTPC with an LG Blu ray /HD-DVD combo , Office PC with the same drive and an Apple 23 inc cinema display ( and yes the difference is very clear even on this small display ), and a BD 35 which was a freebie with the TV. So 4 in all.

Wouldn't be without one now , once you've seen one there's no going back.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

I bought the PS3 at launch specifically for the Blu Ray player as I was told that it can update the software through the internet connection.
That was good enough for me and I am still shocked how good it is in comparison to some so called top end players. Load speed especially.

Got a blu-ray drive (can't remember the make) in the HTPC into a 42" plasma which only does 720P, the picture is amazing, especially noticeable on nature type stuff.

Why is it called BD? It should be BR!
Anyway, I said in the next 12 months because i don't but that many movies, BR players and discs are still more expensive than DVDs but i have just bought a new TV so may buy one later when they become cheaper

Check out

Home Page - NixElectronics

Blu-rays for less than a tenner and a great range too. I found this on a thread on a forum on here. People have been ordering and getting their products in good time.
Note that delivery is cheapest if you spend less than 11 or 12 quid, so order everything in singles!!

Got a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo drive in the HTPC, which is connected to a 32" LCD TV. Have to admit though I havent used the blu-ray playback in a long time.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

My current Blu-ray players:
- Denon 3800BD - for Region A/Region Free Blu-ray playback
- Panasonic BD35 - for Region B Blu-ray playback
- Panasonic BD35 - living room Blu-ray player (multi-region)
- PS3 (60GB) - used for gaming only
- Rock Blu-ray equipped Laptop
- LG Super Multi Drive in desktop PC
- Samsung BDP1000 - decommissioned

I am also looking to buy the new Panasonic HDD/Blu-ray Freesat recorder - although I might wait until Freeview HD launches and buy a version that supports that. And as soon as Denon launch the 4010UD I will buy that as my main Region B Blu-ray player.

Still have a large HD DVD collection that I am in no hurry to decommission - playback of that is handled by a Toshiba XE1 and XA1.

Re: Do you own Blu-ray playing hardware?

Just a launch PS3 for now. Will get UK Oppo when it arrives I reckon.

Also got HD DVD. Thanks to it "loosing" got many bargain films for £3 or less even! Gotta love a dead format, that isn't actually any worse than the wining one!

And HD discs make for a massive improvement on 32" TV, you dont need big screens at all!!!!
If you cannot see the difference then it aint the formats fault!
