Poll. TV settings and features

Just a quick poll to see how forum attitudes are to TV controls or the lack of them. Things like gamma selection, Colour management systems, greyscale (white balance) and interactivity with set up.

Does the TV you are thinking about buying have to offer you the controls to properly set up your TV. Do expert modes, ISFccc and THX make you look at that TV in a better light than one which doesn't? Or are you not that bothered about the level of settings available?

Do you want the best from your TV? Are you prepared to calibrate it yourself or consider hiring someone to do it. Would you like a system that walks you through correct set up of the main controls for your room and sources? Are test patterns built in to a TV an added feature for you. Is your goal to achieve an image which is accurate to what the broadcast and film material is supposed to be shown at?

This is a multi choice poll and you can vote for all the options that are important to you.

Re: Poll. TV settings and features

It's there now, I agree with most of the points, apart from a decent few near the bottom, there are a few things which I'm kind of in the middle of though (personally). I ticked the box for buying a TV based on picture settings etc...it's more of a considerable consideration but ultimately price and other factors will override that.

Also I haven't calibrated either of my TVs, and I don't necessarily intend to (I'm deliberating in the back of my mind) but I have spent several hours settings it up, trying combinations of calibrated and uncalibrated settings posted on the net and tweaking them myself etc...I know I can get a little more out of them but I personally don't have a need to get the absolute best like some people do.

I also ticked the box for having a perfect TV out of the box, I do want that, but I don't want the isf people without a job...ideally it would just be perfect for me as I don't have the money to pay for a pro to do it

Anyway, enough of my running commentary, it'll be interesting to see peoples thoughts on these things

Re: Poll. TV settings and features

I definitely agree that user adjustability really helps to sell a set for me.

For example, compare the Panasonic G10 to the Sony W5500. On the Sony, not only do you get white balance controls, you get to set them, and all other picture settings independently per input. You can also set the custom and standard modes differently within the same input. Regardless of the technological differences of the televisions, this is an undoubtedly major advantage of the Sony.

Re: Poll. TV settings and features

Only reason I didn't select "I want a TV that needs no calibration at all, its perfect out of the box to the standards " which would have been the only option worth picking, is because it will never exist.

Re: Poll. TV settings and features

I chose according to what I beilieve a good TV should be, personally I dont the whole ISF settings out of the box are good because, it cant be ISF callibrated out of the box because ISF doesnt know what room the TV is going in (unless I have completely misunderstood it).

Also the whole picture setting dont mean much to me since I only use standard then use a DVE BR to set it up, however I would like more control over gamma and greyscale without having to go into the systems menu and reverting all my settings at the same time.

Does it mean you don't want one though, cos I still think it would be nice

I like something that has a much user customisation as possible, and I'll pay
more for a better picture / features but at the end of the day, I'll only pay
so much for a TV, thus I'm one of the (surprising to me) few who've
ticked price as being the overall decider. If it wasn't, wouldn't we all have
Kuros/ 10K+ Projectors [Or is that another debate ;]

Re: Poll. TV settings and features

All i want is for the tv to display SD pictures better than a CRT. No need to go into all the details or 'THX', but need a bit of adjusting of course
