outlook Express downloads?

I have some experience with PCs, but not at genius level! I am running, or trying to run outlook express on my wifes laptop. everything appears correctly set up, BUT when I click send and receive, the box is only on screen for about 1 second and nothing is downloaded from the server. I know that there are messages to down load so why does this situation exist, and what is the likely cure.
We have been successfully running the computer and outlook express previously until now, the system is XP home, and outlook express 6?
Help will be appreciated.

Assuming you aoount is set up properly.

Ensure you are not logged in to your account via the web. Some mail servers also require that you are logged out for a few minutes before access can be established from your desktop based mail.
