Well mine is updated to v40 now, it only took about 10 minutes to do it all including the product code change.

Its very very easy to do and you wont regret doing it if you want the v40 firmware which is 10x better than the previous one

Its faster again, more responsive and kinetic scrolling makes it worth the update alone

Go for it peeps

updated mine last night, i had to do a hard reset after the update to get the new features, but i had to do that when i went to v31 previously. Anyway, seems to have made the phone much quicker and the home screen and kinetic scrolling make it much easier to use.

I've got to say i'm not that impressed.
Things i like: it's smoother and seems more responsive, especially the screen rotation.

Things that annoy me: they still haven't fixed the predictive text in internet mode and the web browser still keeps closing for no reason when browsing. And you still can't see name and number on the contacts screen without going into the individual record. 5/10 from me.

*edit* 4/10 - the battery life seems to be shorter on the new firmware as well. Not impressed

The 'unlock screen' slider on my 5800 has started playing up, sometimes it needs 2 pulls to unlock the screen. Is this a known issue ?

Skyfire is out for S60 devices now btw

That means you can view every video site now because it has Flash 10 included and you can watch live TV through your mobile with TVCatchup

I'm upgraded mine to v40 and now have icons and contacts on my home screen, however I seem to have lost my calendar items. It is possible to show these also ? Whats with the RSS feeds against the contacts ?

Another quick question here, how much free memory do you guys have on the phone itself ? I'm showing 15mb free (of 80mb). I install stuff to the memory card if I can, I've tried downloading / installing the new nokia maps for the free voice guidance but it seems to be failing due to lack of space on the phone, just how much free space show I have for the latest maps / software ?

Mine did the same, not sure how much memory mine had. I backed up using pc suite, did a hard reset, downloaded the new maps and then restored settings etc and all was fine

The firmware updates become available at different times for different product codes of the same model. If your phone thinks its up to date then you either have to wait until it becomes available for your product code or change the product code on your phone (which invalidates the warranty). Also if you've got a branded phone (i.e one that says Vodafone or whatever on it ) you might find that you lose any apps which they provide or have modified in some way.

Lots of people do change product code without any problems, but there is always going to be a risk.

You should be able to find out how to change product code and where to find the firmware update by doing a quick google.

edited to add: or even looking back on this thread - like the previous page perhaps

Anyone know when 3 will offer a firmware update? I am on V 30.0.011. Or should I just go for the debaranding? I'm nervous about damaging the phone but iPlayer and the free satnav don't work on this version.

Don't know about 3 but O2 were very poor at giving timely upgrades.

The debranding is easy but does need a hard reset to get it to work properly - just remember to back up your phone before doing it...unlike me...

I can't get the PKEY to work. When I press GO it is meant to say box driver not installed but instead it says Cannot create file C:\Program Files|ODEON\JAF\winscard.dll.

Any ideas?

I did a quick search on the internet and this error usually happens if you don't run it as an administrator. Right click on the file and choose run as administrator.

hope this helps

Thanks for your help. I ended up using NSS instead and it was extremely easy. Thanks to the firmware upgrade I now have the free Nokia satnav and I can get iPlayer to work again too. The other improvements are quite minor but I do like having both shortcuts and contacts on the home screen.

Here is a link to the site I used to debrand Nokia Firmware / Software Unbranding

Just got this phone and (being used to a 3 year old steam driven thing) finding it a revelation.

Idiot question. I've got I Player installed and working OK but I can't work out how to download programmes. I can watch them, but not save them!

The latest iPlayer only lets you watch stuff as it is streamed. I don't know a way around it.

Just downloaded iplayer and it's downloading a programme as I write this. Don't know why you can only stream it.

I think it depends on the program - some are stream only and some you can download. I don't know why though.

I've sucessfully swapped my branding to the the generic 0559346 UK Blue code. Powered off, rebooted and re-read the code back with JAF to be sure. However it still refuses to update beyond v21 either via the mobile or using the Nokia PC program (it's a Virgin Mobile supplied phone).
Is there anything else I need to do? Should I do a factory reset to remove the last traces of V Mobile from the phone and then retry?

Did you try a hard reset? Didn't need one myself but a lot of people do.
I hope you did a back up 1st?

ahh yes, it's a bit of a pain in the arse tbh. you have to press and slide your finger across the corresponding sliding bar to stop/snooze it! This is not my favourite part of the update - it feels unnecessary and gimicky.

are you using wlan or 3g. apparantly iplayer wont download from 3g to save network providers bandwidth. should work fine on wlan though.

Having a right old palava with this. Connected to wi-fi, but every time I open iplayer, it automatically asks me if I want to connect to the internet. (Through the mobile provider, not over WLAN) How do I override this.
