The reason I commented on the screen size of the Lumia 800 in comparison to the N9, is it's essentially the same phone, so exact same dimensions, but with the 800 a fair bit of the actual screen display is lost with the bottom icon only(non display)area.

N9 on the right^

Makes a difference when you're using applications such as "Drive" and want to use all of the screen real estate.

But on the flip side, those buttons make navigation much easier and the same resolution on a smaller screen increase its sharpness.

The N9 is 480x854 vs the 800's 480x800.

Both pentile matrix displays.

The other nice thing about the N9 is that the curved shape of the phone was designed to compliment the OS, which relies on the side wipe gesture to take you back to the home screen. So the addition of capacitive buttons on the N800 spoils this original design philosophy.

Does make a whole lot of difference to be honest.

Very true, the phone design together with the swype based interface seem to marry together so perfectly, would love to get my hands on one to try it out.

Just a heads up for anyone looking to buy a sim free version. I just received this email from Clove regarding my pre-order.

Dear Mr Montague,

We are contacting you this afternoon regarding the release date of the Nokia Lumia 800. Unfortunately we have now heard that the Nokia Lumia 800 UK SIM-free stock will not be available to us until January 2012.

This is very frustrating as we were expecting the Lumia to be released much sooner, but will now have to wait until the new year. We are aware that the Lumia will still be launched in the UK this month, but will only be available with a contract from selected stores.

As it stands you have not been charged for your pre-order. Unless we receive a request from you to cancel the order, we will keep the order in place for you until stock is available in January.

Apologies that we cannot bring you more positive news at this time. We appreciate your custom and will keep you updated with any further developments regarding the Nokia Lumia 800.

Kind Regards

Sales Team

Clove Technology

A bit frustrating that it sees that the initial stocks are for contracts only.

That is frustrating. I was hoping the price would drop a little by January

I'll take it for £300-320 but not £400 considering the competition (the SGS2 in particular). I wish more phones were around the size of the Lumia.

Nokia regarding availablity:

Quote:
"The Nokia Lumia 800 goes on sale on the 16th of November as we stated during the launch at Nokia World. There are some rather odd stories circulating at present, it’s rather flattering as it proves that there are a lot of people who believe the Lumia 800 will be a major sales item and are now trying to get it onto their shelves.

"However for the rollout of our first Lumia products, we have chosen to work with the UK operator and retail partners who shared our enthusiasm and commitment to bring these first products to market with a major focus on bringing alive the Nokia with Windows Phone experience for consumers. Therefore we are making sure that by using these channels the Lumia 800 will be available to our customers in the widest variety of outlets from SIM free to contract.

"We have also worked extensively to train these channels to support the product. From Q1 next year we will be supplying the product to our wider UK distribution network and in the interim we will be supporting these additional channels with training ready for this wider reach."
So basically, limited quantities will be available sim free but only through places like carphone warehouse, phones4u etc. Online retailers will have to wait until January.

Carphone Warehouse have it listed SIM free for £469.95. That's more than the SGS2 and thirty quid off the iPhone 4S. I guess it will drop a little by Christmas but fat chance selling at that price

Had a play with one of these in CPW and I'm astounded how good it is, phone itself is really nice as I've come to expect from Nokia really, and the OS seems lovely too, I've not long upgraded to a Bold 9900 or I'd have been getting this but its certainly given me something else to look at next year (Nokia + WP7) if theres nothing new from Blackberry.

I had quick look at this in CPW. It was a display model only (not switched on). Nice sleek design but I have to admit I thought it was a little bulky.

yeah that does seem a tad pricey. handtec have it for £383.99 unlocked but it has a T-mobile start up logo. I think when it starts becoming more available simfree we'll see it come down to a similar price to this.

It's gonna be priced at £399 so it's still not bad all things considered, but it doesn't seem to match up with other high end devices-- the SGS2 is at this price (I much prefer the Nokia size though).
Tethering will be added via software update

Had a play with one early, love it. Having recently sold my iphone 4 down to signal strength and build quality I`m in the market for another phone and this one looks like it might fit the bill.

The OS like everyone else mentioned is so slick and smoooth and feels like a proper os, unlike android which just looks like a cluttered mess.

Really liking the OLED screen to, deep blacks and very vibrant colours same as the galaxy really. Iphone might have the extra resolution, but can`t match the oled screens for colour and contrast.

Also feels really nice in the hand and is the perfect size for me as phone sizes are becoming stupid these day (yes samsung i`m looking at you).

Welcome back Nokia, we have missed you

Anyone know the best deal going on a 18 month?

Really fancy getting one of these when my upgrade is due on next month. T-Mobile told me that I can have the phone for free on my existing 18 month flext 40 tariff. Not sure whether to wait for the Neus or not.

Been a very happy iPhone user for years, just fancy a change. Might see if Carphone Warehouse has one out on demo tomorrow.

Spoke with Orange today and am awaiting mine.

I was out of contract and managed to get one free on an 18 month contract with 400 mins, unlimited texts and 600MB of data for 23.50 a month. So, just waiting for stock to come back in now !! The deal was only 100 MB of data but I have been with Orange 12 years and they gave me an extra 500MB plus a further 10% off the monthly cost bringing it to £23.50 from £26.50. I have been looking at for a new phone after the Blackberry debacle and thought iPhone was overpriced and overhyped and fancied something different.

Nice one. Which tariff is that deal based on? I've been with orange for ages too so hopefully looking to get something similar.

OK. I've had a look at the prices on the website and you seem to have got a really good deal as the phone would normally be £150 with that tatiff. I doubt theyd be as generous to me. I would hope to spend no more than 30 a month over 18 months with the phone free... and maybe an Xbox thrown in as well.

They did offer me the Xbox deal, but it would have been £36 a month, although they never mentioned what minutes/texts or data bundle this came with. I was looking to get a deal round about £25 and when he said £23.50 I snapped his hand off . He called back earlier this evening and confirmed it all again and phone should be with me on Monday

Hi Chaps
I saw one of these in CPW and was very impressed too, I've had BB Torch/iPhones for he last few years and really liked the OS and it's use.
Nowadays however I just also think about residual values as well as functionality and the cost of this off contract is too close to an ip4s. I'm looking at this for my wife and therefore we wonder how much this would be worth in a year, it's a shot in the dark but what's your feeling?

With the ip4s we already have the use of an iPad/iPhone and apple Tv connected to he home audio which is really useful, does the Lumina have any capabilities via windows media centre for example? I see it can remote an Xbox 360 but I cant stand running mine up cos of he noise! So only use it for games and not media..

Cheers
Tone

Disappointing sales: Nokia Windows Phone sales set to disappoint | News | TechRadar

I'm not surprised. You can say it's apples and oranges when you compare the Lumia and SGS2, but as a buyer that is exactly what you would do. The SGS2 is still probably the most powerful phone around and is more advanced than the Lumia, yet they are at the same price point. The main difference in favour of the Lumia is that it is a much better size (imo).

Drop it to PayG £300 and I would've picked one up.

The window (mind the pun) of opportunity is small if you ask me. Once ICS is out on Android and hopefully addresses the jerkiness with hardware acceleration, and also gives the OS a makeover, it's gonna be even harder to justify this phone. The Windows ecosystem is smaller than Android so this phone really needs better technology/specs or a lower price to compete. I'm surprised Nokia haven't done more to get that Christmas period business. The SGS2 is aggressively priced, Nokia need to do the same.

I also haven't mentioned the iPhone 4 which is still decent value at £430 (considering the 4S is a minor upgrade), only £30 more than the Nokia and similar contract prices.

Yep impressive huh
They generally get the right ballpark figure. There isn't much buzz around this phone tbh, which is a shame...

the less people who have it the cooler it will be

I like the look of the blue version but I think only the black one is available to me on contract.

They generally don't issue comments but Nokia says Windows Phone excellent start in Britain

Nov 23 (Reuters) - Nokia said sales of its first Windows Phone model, the Lumia 800, were off to an excellent start in Britain, dismissing analyst comments of weak sales start, which have hit shares in the Finnish company.

"Lumia 800 sales in the U.K. are off to an excellent start," Nokia said in a statement. "Based on earliest data the sales start of the Lumia 800 is the best ever first week of Nokia smartphone sales in the U.K. in recent history."

Nokia unveiled a strategy shift to use Microsoft software on its smartphones in February in a bid to create a rival to Apple and Google's Android, and started to sell its first model last week in Britain, France and Germany.

"By our measures, we have gained significant smartphone sell-out share in the channels in which we are operating in the U.K.," Nokia said.

Would love a limia for £300 but it's too much at the moment, will wait till Xmas for price drop. If not I'll get a second hand Omnia 7.

I'm so bloody impressed with Windows 7, gonna wait till I sell my 4s and jump on windows.

The is is so fast and slick with a 1ghz CPU, something I haven't seen on android or even ios at times. However we need more colour in the OS as black and white is to bleak and depressing.

So true, nothing worst than having the same phone as everyone else. One of the reasons I wanted a Pre3, and am still happy with my E7

To be uber cool though you'd need to import an N9
