Symbian is dead long live ....

Windows 7. It is finally official, no Linux variants but windows 7 is the future for nokia mobile phones. Finally after all those years I might consider a nokia handset again.

RIP: Symbian -- Engadget

They are still going to keep and develop MeeGo though, but for specific 'high end' applications and projects.

Symbian is dead, it will not be developed moving forward at all. Existing supported handsets will remain and, of course, phones people own aren't suddenly going to die! But there wont be any more development which means third-party Dev's will stop producing Apps for Symbian too.

It's a dead platform.

Ofcourse not, don't be daft You just finally, hoorah, can't buy them from Nokia anymore. Now ofcourse it was already dead as they were going Meego/Meamo but the slight surprise is Windows 7.

Although the markets don't seem to agree I think it is a good one for their consumer mobile phone business.

PS. Lets not forget that Nokia does a lot more than just mobile phone, got lots of their equipment in various datacenters for example. So as this is posted in a mobile phone section it is meant for mobile phones ;-)

It is still getting development to ensure the new phones are launched and UI updates are still planned to go ahead to ensure that those new phones will sell the 150m they expect.

Sure there is a year of transition announced, and I'd expect for normal phones like the 6700 etc there will still be a Market and it will be interesting to see how that development fork will be. But for the proper smart phone I'm suspecting that the decline will rapidly go further and quite a few people will get annoyed when they realise nobody is developing for it. Then again hardly anyone is now as it is anyway.

There is one thing having a large user base, there is another having a user base that pays for its applications whether through one off, ads or subscription methods.
