I'll be getting it sim-free anyway, hopefully through a mate who works for Nokia with their friends & family discount. Will then get a giffgaff sim-card

My contract is up on the 19th September. At the moment I have an N97 mini - I will definitely hold off until the N8 comes to Vodafone.

Yes, £399 was the magic figure for me. Unless there are some discount vouchers floating around I will pass too. (Last year I was able to use 2 15% off vouchers + 10% cashback for a N97 mini - Total cost about £260).

The problem with £429 is that it puts it up against the HTC Desire. Now the N8 has a better camera for sure, but Desire wins on many other fronts. On top of that I'm a bit fed up with Nokia just now as my Nokia messaging account has expired (fair enough) but the default email client on the N97 is rubbish.

I'm due an upgrade via t-mobile. A Samsung Galaxy s comes in at £120 on my upgrade plan. If Play.com have the N8 at £419 pre-order and the Galaxy S at £429, would I be right in guessing that I'd get it about the same as an upgrade (£120 ish) since that the only way it seems viable to me?
I believe I have until 29th sept.

Agreed. It's the wrong side of £400 and too close to other devices like the Desire. If it turns out to be accurate, I'll be giving it a miss. Nice move Nokia!

Right then, where's that Desire HD info...

Yep it's a really bad move by Nokia, especially after all the delays. I'll wait and see how much discount i can get with my mate's friends and family discount (works for Nokia) before i start looking at other phones - not sure which though...

Is it just me, or can anyone else see the similarities between the stylings of the N8 and the classic DeLorean motor car? (More pominantly, the front bumper)

Here is a good image for comparison:

Funny that, it was a car ahead of it's time and is now ultimately seen as what can happen when a good idea goes wrong.
Lets hope the N8 doesn't suffer the same fate!!

Not sure it's been delayed that much has it? Official release was always going to be the end of the summer IIRC. I'm sure if they could have got away with not announcing it when they did they wouldn't have. They're in a tricky place as the company has always been a bit of sieve when it comes to new handsets being kept under wraps. Either announce them early and control the information or have prototypes running alpha firmware leak via blogs.

Can't be long now. I am itchy to get hands on with that camera and also see what has been improved with this latest version of Symbian. The OS deserves one last moment of glory on a flagship device as it's been such an important part of the mobile world.

EDIT : Engadget now reporting 30th September..

Reading a review of the N8 on Wired.co.uk, I stumbled upon a unique feature of this phone which I was previously unaware of:

Hands on: Nokia N8

You could download images off a camera to it, for example, or plug in an external hard drive to watch a movie stored on it. Or, of course, you could use it to steal your friend's MP3 collection. We'll see how the record labels and movie studios like that.
I can't believe how obvious such a feature is on modern phones, yet one which seems to be overlooked. I am glad that Nokia have finally picked up on this, and realised the potential - Especially as modern handsets are more or less just micro PC's

+1 to Nokia!

I don't understand Nokia - what's the point of such a delayed release for the N8 when the N9 (slider) looks great, has an all-metal case and is due for release in December!!

What a balls-up!!

It seems to read on the site that the Orange version is "Limited Edition" - How limited?

And that more annoyingly for some of you the Blue version is shipping "Late October"

It does say that both the HDMI adapter and that mentioned USB adapter are included in the box though.. Still pretty tempted as I managed to get my C905 repaired with Sony for free so it's lasting till the required date

I'm similarly tempted, but am waiting for the payg/contract/upgrade prices.

USB OTG will be hugely useful for photo backup whilst out and about (no dragging the netbook with me), HDMI output .... and the camera looks like it'll be as good as (possibly better than?) most compacts, so it'll be a handy backup camera.

Pre-order from Nokia UK site.

Nokia UK - Nokia N8 - Product

No 30 day or 12 month plans listed.

Without checking any FUPs on data, or network coverage (everybody has their preferences), it looks like the T-Mobile £35pm for 18 months, 600 minutes, with a free phone could be the one to go for. (O2 and Vodafone are only offering 300 minutes.)

After all the initial speculation on pricing, it's still too rich for me. So unless there's an amazing review of a retail product, I'll probably still be giving it a miss.

Good news! I just got the pre-order eMail from Nokia

The eMail contained a link to this page:
Nokia UK - Nokia N8 - Product

It also has a list of networks and tariffs available. I just pre-ordered mine (Reluctantly) on an 18 month O2 contract for £35 per month, which seems to be the best deal I am going to get right now.

The checkout screen states that there may be a 39 day wait for the Blue N8, which places it around the 22nd of October - A whole month after the others are released. Let's only hope that the estimated waiting period is exaggerated and it comes a lot sooner than that. I also hope that the delay isn't due to poor workmanship or inferior design (Something which has plagued the release of the iPhone 4 in White)

Available networks and tariffs can be viewed on this page:
Tariffs - Nokia N8 - Airtime Shop

I also notice that only Vodafone, T Mobile, and O2 tariffs are listed - No Orange. So bad luck to anyone hoping to get it on Orange

Really? Damn.. I saw posts from about 7 months ago where it was 20%, not sure it was valid on pre-order's though..

May hold off until shipping date and first retail reviews before fully deciding, Are there any other phones close to this spec-wise with the camera, video and compatability? (HMDI/USB etc)

For those of you in the UK who are able to view iPlayer programmes, there is an interesting piece on BBC News show "Click" regarding the Nokia N8's native Dolby Surround sound feature:

BBC iPlayer - Click: 11/09/2010

Only viewable between the 11th of September 2010 until the 18th of September 2010 (Skip to around 9:42 for the N8 feature)

Will that be locked to Tesco/02 ?
If so how easy would it be to get it unlocked?

Copied this from there website, looks promising........

Unlock my phone?
Can I use another SIM in my Tesco phone?

If you wish to use another network's SIM, you will need to arrange for it be unlocked. If this is the case, you must not insert another operator's SIM card into the mobile without an unlatching code (which is not your PIN code). We will on request provide an unlatching code after 12 months starting from the date you activated your handset. If you activate your handset and use the Tesco Mobile network for less than 12 months before receiving an unlatching code, we will charge you a fee of £20 to unlock your handset.

If you wish to use Apple iPhone ......

All Pay monthly contract handsets are eligible for an unlatching code after the completion of the Pay monthly contract period.

Please contact Customer care on 0845 301 4455 or call 4455 from your Tesco Mobile for further information on the qualifying period, applicable conditions and charges.

Now that's promising. However, it's out of stock and no pre-order is available. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have it at the low price to grab interest, then up it by £100 when it's finally in stock.

So, while we're here discussing the imminent N8, Nokia have gone and done another own goal - the E7 looks good, as does the C7 - both of which are similar to the N8, and in the case of the C7, probably cheaper.

So my original idea of buying an N8 may well be delayed due to new product announcements .... but choice has to be a good thing.

So my original idea of buying an N8 may well be delayed due to new product announcements .... but choice has to be a good thing.
I originally was going to purchase the N8, but with today's announcements, I've changed my mind....be getting the C7 without doubt.

If you go to Nokia's site and select 'Compare', the 'C7', 'E7' and the 'N8'...think you be pleasantly surprised that the C7 is as good as...or if not better than the others and more affordable.

C7 all the way

Depends on what your after from your phone. For me a 12MP AF with Zenon will trump pretty much everything that the C7 can offer me....and HDMI output is pretty awesome for displaying those videos/pictures.
