We all know this is the phone of the year. It has great reviews and the features are easy to identify from the Nokia site - but I think a brief critique is something I would have found useful before this phone arrived.
This is a great phone, but not straight out of the box. After several days of tweaking it has finally become the piece of kit I wanted it to be - here is my advice.
1. As soon as it arrives, if you are on Orange, DEFINITELY
wipe it and load the Nokia firmware. Aside from losing the horrible graphics, When I go into my 'Downloads' section there is probably 5 times as much stuff to download - including Windows Live (which wasn't available through Orange). Apparently this software also improves the camera etc.
Updating E71 Firmware to Generic EURO1 Version « The MOTH
I checked with Orange and they said that this doesn't invalidate your 6 month warranty with them which is great. The operation in this link worked flawlessly for me and the phone has many more features (such as VOIP) as a result.
2. The best widgets I have found are
Opera mini YouTube Facebook Google Maps and
The iPlayer hack (more on this later).
-
Opera is much better than the built in browser - although Skyfire was also quite nice. The bookmarks/speed dial work really well and the theme colour cutomization is a nice touch (black, obviously). Nokia's browser takes over on some links, but this isn't a real issue.
-
YouTube is probably my favourite widget - it is far better than using a browser to view the site. Although streaming anything on 3G is problematic, on wifi you get a much better quality picture than any browser and the interface is excellent. (This and Google maps come from Google's mobile site)
- The
Facebook Widget works very nicely too, loading a smartly-sized Facebook page. This is available in the 'Download section' from your E71 after loading the Nokia firmware.
-
Google Maps works well and the new Latitude feature lets you keep an eye on your friends locations. (I haven't convinced any friends to set this up yet, so can't comment on how it works, but it's a cool idea)
3. Get Nokia Messaging. The built in email is pretty good, but you need this to view HTML.
4. One big niggle I had was the connection manager. My Macbook has the BEST system ever. You have a list in which you prioritize your connections - and the Macbook automatically switches to the highest connection in the list currently available. Every single electronic device, anywhere in the world should do this.
If I set my E71's various applications to automatically use my home wifi, the phone complains it can't connect when I leave the house. So I have to set most of its functions up to select an access point manually each time. This isn't too bad, it just means a few clicks each time I load something - but it is unnecessary.
5. Get the iPlayer widget. THIS IS NOT EASY. But it is seriously good. » BBC iPlayer on the E71 inc Downloads
Let me explain this - far too many people on the internet don't:
- Symbian S60 software is protected so that you cannot load home-made things onto it. This means no open-source tweaking etc. and NO modding.
- If you want to make S60 software, you need a developers licence.
- Symbian will NOT give you one easily.
- What you need, is to get one made especially for your IMEI number
The most popular site to use and request a certificate from is a Chinese site called OPDA, here is one guide to using it, but there are many more you can Google.
OPDA Cert Guide - in Proper English - Mobile Phone Applications Mobile Games and Mobile Programs On Dotsis.com
(Personally, this did NOT work for me. I did everything properly, but the 'cert' and 'key' links just led me to some stupid Chinese download management program. I had to find someone on a forum to make one for me!)
When you get the Cert and Key file you have to use a program like SignSis to authenticate certain iPlayer files.
Now you have done this, it works perfectly and downloads files.
(The guide suggesting using HelloCarbide was useless for me - and other E71 users have said the same. Getting custom-made 'cert' and 'key' files is the only way I have found that works)
Conclusions:
I now love my E71 - it does everything I need it to. I still use my Zune for music and big movies, but this is great for crusing the internet, streaming youtube/iplayer and doing emails.
There are just a couple of niggles:
-
NO 3.5mm jack. This is unforgiveably short-sighted. The E63 (it's younger brother) has one - I now have to carry around a 2.5mm-3.5mm converter everywhere I go to use my Zune headphones with this.
Absolutley unforgiveable.
- I would like more than 5 (including switch) app shortcuts on my homepage - there's plenty of room for a second row.
You can find plenty of reviews on the features around, but I would have found a little beginners guide like this quite useful - so here you go.
This is the best phone I have owned (coming from Sony Ericsson K800i and W960i)- the only phones I would change it for are the Nokia N97, or the huge Samsung i8910.
But £19.50/month with 600 minutes and EVERYTHING else unlimited vs. £40+ and (probably) a £100+ handset payment?
I'm pretty happy.
