Please tell me how to get out of here...............!

I'm in the wind temple...... done all the bits and bobs as far as I am aware, I have planted two seeds in the basement of the large central area, which made the big fan appear. I am ready to go to fight the boss, seemingly I need to get in below the fan, but I can't see a way to do it. There is a square in between the two plants, which looks like it is the way down, as there is a grassy area below it, but I can't break the square......

I have tried bombs, iron boots, jumping, everything.....

Can anyone PLEASE tell me what I am doing wrong - I have been here for 2 hours now, and am getting very annoyed!!
