Are All x-box's noisy?

Can't leave the damn thing alone to-day!!

Great bit of kit, but apart from my previous confusion over 60 hz, are the x boxes noisy. I know they have a hard disk etc but sounds like a fan is also going??

Nothing to worry about??

Thanks good people.

Has anyone used their box for DVD's and found the "Working" noise of the X-Box distracting??

Presumably the causes are:-

1) Hard Disk constantly spinning (Much like a PC)
2) CPU Cooling fan.
3) CD Rom drive.

Bit disappointed in this.

Regards

Well mine is sitting on top of my PS2 at the moment and I'd have to say the PS2 is noisier than the Xbox although comparissons are a little tricky as the machines seem to produce differing frequencies .

I know I'll stick me SPL meter on them.

Xbox is about 52db
PS2 is about 60db

taken very close to get a reading so its just a comparisson rather than an accurate real world measure but certainly the PS2 is louder.

when I switch them both on I can only hear the PS2 as its effectively masking the Xbox.

I thought for a minute that microsoft had been very sneaky and made the footprint on the xbox exactly the same size as the PS2 but its about 5mm too big! They don't look too ugly stacked together though. The PS2 is quite solid and nice and flat on top for stackability and the rubber feet on the Xbox give it a teeny air gap. Not likely I'll ever run them both at the same time though so heat won't be a problem!

Cheers Keith,
I have yet to find anyone with a box close by that I can compare.

Is the majority of the noise from the right hand side of the box as I presumme the fan is located at the back.

Thanks Again
Mark

Don't really know mine is sitting in an enclosed shelving unit so its sort of difficult to ascertain where th esound is coming from but its not terrible. My PC is way louder. With the sound up you lose it no sweat.

All Xbox' s are noisey BUT some make more noise than others - I bought mine yesterday from Currys thought it was too loud (much louder than PS2 and dreamcast - high pitched spin/drive noise too cutting) took it back - said it's faulty (they're lazy and never check - and who cares - certainly not them!) I swapped it and it's way quieter this one, so if it's bugging you why not do the same and hey if it's just the same when you get it home then you know yours is no louder than the rest of ours. I've had three PS2's (it's a long story) and some of them are quiet some are loud - just the way of the world I suppose. Hope this helps - let me know.

The fans that are used in these products are usually extrememly poor quality and vary widely in noise output. You only have to listen to a stock PC, the noise is ridiculous. I fit my PC's with fans from www.quietpc.com which are virtually silent. I don't know if it would be possible to dismantle the Xbox and fit one of these. Probably unwise for warranty reasons. Won't stop me though.

I don't have ANY of the above problem.
There maybe some little noise from the hard drive when saving
a level. That's only if i listen hard.

Perhaps you played too much loud music in the past!!
My experience and those of people I know with them is they are noisy compared to some stuff but you get used to it. Perhaps your Xbox is shy and doesn't like to make too much fuss........

I doub't it.. i just tried this the past 2 months ago :

http://www.members.aol.com\stormstown\cerumol.jpg

My xbox is very quiet. It's sitting next to my sony dvd player
and behaving itself.

All my mates have been around to check it out and can't beleive
how the actual xbox system sound \ dimentiions of it are so
exaggerated by people whining abt it.

I converted 2 ps2 fans today!
Just a few games of Rally Sport Challenge and Halo... that's
all it took.

one mile away without them noticing i'm there!
Now i'm in the middle of field with a 2 laser pulse type guns and
they're runing out of charge! and to top it of the scout ship
is dropping more aliens on me....

looks like i won't be getting sleep tonight...for another night!
It's a good thing i'm on the evening shift at work ;-))

Bottom line is it's a great machine and part of that power and flexibility is all the stuff under the bonnet, so it's going to make some noise. I just hope it gets software that really takes advantage of it and not just PS2 ports with better graphics - that would be sad.

Oh and send me those ear plugs I keep waking myself up with my own nightly snoring

Hi Taz

Can u help me on Halo?

I'm stuck on halo on the the 2nd level (on planet halo).

I've blasted everything that moves. And the
alien ships keep on droppin' the aliens.
I'm standing in the center where the pillar keeps throwing up a turquoise light.
But what am i supposed to do after that?

Plase tell me as I've mastered the art of eliminating the enemey with granades and needlers. And I keep running out of ammo.

Also does my Master Cheif character have a run option?
Cuz i might have a horde of aliens chasin' me and the guy is
havin' a stroll in the park! (literally in this case)

Shaz,

Have a look in the video games forum at my post ' Max Payne Walkthrough'. I have posted a walkthrough for Halo in the same post.

Find the downed escape craft and get into it . Its a short distance away from the main structure and is much more easy to defend. The escape craft only has one narrow entrance and is easily defendable ( just crouch and let rip whenever any of the Cuv poke their heads rounds). Nip out to pick up a plasma pistol/rifle when you start to run low on ammo ( never never get caught with an empty gun in Halo don't be tempted to hang on to favoured weapons).

Of course this is on normal level : higher and they might think to chuck a grenade down your throat!

Spoiler free: I'm currently doing the bit directly after you find out what happened to the captain and following the wee blue fella and its very very scary! ( go slow is my tip and take care of all business from boltholes you find) Man this is a great game !

Cool Re: Re: stuck on halo

Hi Keith

Thanks for your help.
I guess it's just a matter for me to hang in there and keep blasting
away with a close eye on how much ammo i have left.

on the ledgendry level the aliens are a lot smarter,
it's scarey how smart they are! i've never experienced a game like
this where the enemy can change the plan of assault at the last
minute according to your movements.
I did run to the aircraft... i was hoping to get some exclusive
weapon... but there was nothing special there.
Just machine gun, medical supplies and granades, considering the poistion; the granades won't be much use.
When i'm in that postion,
the 3 aliens guns.. the blue \ green \ needler seem to run out of
battery. I did try sitting confortably in the aircraft and shooting
them down bit by bit.. but I find myself "needled" out by the
grunts.

That's when i get creamed!

(never never get caught with an empty gun in Halo don't be tempted to hang on to favoured weapons).

I seem to hang onto the large blue plasma covenant gun,
and needler. I'll have to vary my choices now or rather pick up
whatever is avaialble,

Of course this is on normal level : higher and they might think to chuck a grenade down your throat!

not just that... but they're a lot smarter. and position themselves
such that where ever u go they'll take a pop at you.
and pump you with needlers!

the legendry level is certainly much more fun. it forces you to
develop strategies that u couldn't think of before!
