Nintendogs, ***?

Bought my daughter nintendogs for Xmas and it has been a source of frustration for her and me ever since. She picks a dog, she tries to teach it it's name (which seems to take forever), she types in it's name, all well and good so far (well ish). The dog then appears and she can whistle it and play with it with the stylus , not long after it comes up with a message about did it react to it's name , then not long after that it says it's forgotten it's name and she has to go through the whole naming process again. None of the icons for training or going out are appearing , having read the instructions there's one sentence that suggests those icons don't appear until you've named the dog and taught it to sit. So how do you teach it to sit exactly?! The instructions don't explain and without a training icon I don't really see how you can teach it to do anything!
Are we just being dumb or is this really as frustrating a game as it seems to be?

Cheers
Andy

I had a similar experience with my daughter's Nintendogs for Xmas day. Turned out the microphone wasn't working, which meant that the dog couldn't learn its name, which meant that the game couldn't progress!

Took it back to the shop yesterday and got it exchanged. Works a treat now and she's really got on quickly with it (without any need to read the manual -- haven't met an 8-year old kid yet that reads a manual!).

Given our experience, are you sure the microphone is working? When you say the dogs name (when prompted), you should hear the name echoed back immediately afterwards. If you don't hear the echo back, then you may also have a microphone problem.

My daughter tells me that you have to tell the dog to "sit down" after stroking its head and pulling its nose down with the stylus about 5 times. After that you should see a new icon for going outside.

Hope this helps.

thankyou, will give it a try. Yes it does seem to repeat the name back after saying it so I don't think the microphone is completely broken. We'll see how it goes, thanks again

Arrrgh having the same problem too! I've got a six-year kid that's rapidly going off the game because we can't get beyond the voice command bit.

It says that the name was recorded correctly, but we're going in circles on the bit where you have to practice calling your dog by it's new name. It keeps asking if the dog responded - although there's no option to say yes or no apparently - and then after a few atempts it dumps you back at the recording the name bit again.

It wouldn't be so bad if you could come back to this bit later, but as it is all I can do is point out the cool bits to come in the game and promise that I'll crack it eventually. Well, either that or crack up.

You have to repeat the name (or any command) EXACTLY the same way every time or it won't work... My 4 year old can't make it work reliably, my 8 year old can ...

Well it seems a bit ridiculous to rely on what is always a hit and miss technology in order to be able to progress and use the game. I'm sure my daughter wouldn't mind that much if she didn't have to say the dogs name at all, all she wants to do is play with the damn thing and teach it tricks etc!

Teaching it tricks needs the microphone also!

ALL of the dogs are like this at first, but some are more stupid than others (It'll tell you it's temperament etc before you buy it)..
The key is that once you've said it's name 3 times (Doesn't have to be exactly the same) it'll ask you to type it in. It'll them come to the bottom screen where you should keep rubbing the dog (keep making 'stars') and saying it's name. After about a minute, it'll say it likes it's name.

If you don't keep rubbing it, it'll 'forget' it's name.. in order for you to pick another one.

Yeah seem to have got this sorted now. You know what I think the problem was, trying to teach it it's name on Xmas day with all the noise in the background (we were with the inlaws etc and it was a bit noisy!). I think it really needs a low level of background noise in order to work properly. Anyway she now seems to be making progress...

Oh God, the joys of parenthood, sat up last night doing impressions of the kids into the Ds ,and to my amazement it worked The kids can now play together with the dogs and my impressions seem to have worked, they work for the kids also only had to redo sit with one of the kids this morning, must say however that the Ds is quite an impressive peice of kit, they've got one each an have sat all morning using Picochat, also the Nintendog game is quite impressive once you get into it. Btw theres a full list of trick and advice here http://www.gamespot.com/ds/strategy/...nds/hints.html

LMAO!

My lil bro and sis got one each for xmas and they struggled to get their dogs to learn their name... I had to do it in the end cause they were getting so frustrated and couldn't do it, you've just got to be patient mate and i found that its best to repeat the command in the same way each time and in the same tone. I think you only have to give the command and type it 3 or 4 times before it remembers it... just remember to keep petting (rubbing it with the stylus) the dog whilst your teaching it its name etc...

Have fun!

I sent the kids to bed early and I've just flattened the DS battery playing Mario Kart online - I still didn't manage to beat anyone and I fear the average age of the competition may be under 10 ...
