Which Mario games are best? 2D or 3D?

Definitely 3D.

All 2D games are inherently limited, not that this precludes them from being better than 3D counterparts, but the 3D Mario games have always been so good (except Sunshine) that it's difficult to reason why the 2D ones could be better. Sure they might have been more important back in the day, but that's not what "best" means.

The 2d games have never done it for me, there are better 2d platformers I think. However, both Galaxy games are fantastic

Seeing Super Mario 64 in 3D on the N64 was a real jaw dropping moment at the time

Nothing's topped Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island for me. Pixel art is just too appealing, especially in the latter case.

I really didn't like Mario 64. I didn't play it at the time, but playing it now I find that it feels sluggish by comparison and harder to control.

I do love the Mario Galaxy games though. New SMB on the Wii is nice and great fun to play, but doesn't look so great.

Has to be 2D for me... but then again I've never been a fan of 3D platformers.

2D for me, sometimes making things 3D just doesnt work out, take Donkey Kong for example, went 3D on the N64 but now its back as it should be on the wii

best mario game ever has to be SNES MarioKart followed by N64 MarioKart and now DS and Wii MarioKart! If I was stuck on the desert Island with and internet connection it would definitely be Wii MarioKart I'd take!

If I had to choose from the Platform genre though it would be very tough as I've played all of the mario games right the way through and loved each one.

No, I really can't choose between them so I'm gonna take mariokart instead...

The 2D platformers of nes and snes era are the best mario games ever. The pseudo-3D mario kart games comes a close second

I prefer the old 2d Mario games I do like Galaxy series though,
also going bit off topic I liked the 2d Metroid games far more I never had much interest in new 3d Metroid.

I prefered the 2D games...but that not to say that the 3D ones were bad.
I just thought Super Mario world and Yoshi's Island were two of the finest games ever.

I really couldn't pick.

SMB3 and SMW are the best 2d games ever made but SM64 and SMG 1&2 are the best 3d games ever too (IMHO of course)

There is no way I could pick, so I will take MW2 to thr island instead

Or maybe wait for Super Mario U before I make up my mind.

SMB3 and SMW are high points for 2D platforming. SMBWii comes close. Even after the truly great M64 I would still have just sided on 2D. However Galaxy 1&2 are so good I really couldn't choose now.

OT - but if you want a really excellent modern 2D platformer to go with SMBWii - go for Donkey Kong Country Returns - it plays great, looks stunning and has loads of hardcore replayability with time trial medals and collectables for go for and a fun 2 player simultanous mode which isn't as chaotic as SMBWii.
