Problems saving progress in Burnout

I am playing championship mode and complete the course 3rd or better, and save manually but when I go back to play game again I am back on first track again. Instruction book is not very helpful, any ideas anyone? Is Burnout 2 the same?

Make sure the XBox internal clock is set to the correct time and date. That seems to help with some other games like FIFA.
