I was in the same boat, and just decided to buy a DS-Lite to replace my old DS and frankly, the difference is night and day.
On the down side, the new version is a little too small for my hands.. When playing games with the buttons its not too bad.. But one 'touch screen' based games (i.e Picross) I find that there is nothing to hold onto... But I am sure I will get used to it.
I am also not entirly happy with the slight yellow screen on the touch screen.. But this is a known 'problem' and again, I will get used to it.
But on the plus side.. First of all the Sound.. Its amazing.. They must have used some digital trickery as the sound appears to come from several feet to the left and right of the unit.. The effect gives a really 'wide' sound stage and is very impressive.
On the screen front, the obvious thing is the brightness.. Its unbelievable how much brighter the screen is.. On my old DS, there were games that I couldn't even see.. Dementia springs to mind.. Its a 'dark' game like "Silent Hill" but I simply couldn't see what was going on.. But on the DS-Lite, its bright and MUCH more visible.
But the most impressive thing for me, is how sensitive the touch screen is.. There are First Person games which use the Touch screen to look around (Metroid, Call of Duty, etc) and they were impossible with the old DS.. You either had to press the screen really hard, or use a stylus.. Pressing the screen hard didn't work, as you couldn't move/look around fluidly.. Using the Stylus also didn't work, as you had to use the buttons too.. On the DS-Lite, the screen responds to the lightest touch!
In conclusion, this is a no brainer.. If you can sell your old one, do it and get a Lite.. The upgrade will only cost £20-£50 (depending on how much you get for your old one, and how cheap you can find a Lite).. I hope this helps
Good luck
