Can you transfer a contract phone number to a PAYG?

Hey Guys,

A number of years ago I had a 12 month contract with three and then after it ended up kept the same number and got a three PAYG top up card and been using that ever since. Now in my are three has always had really bad reception and I want to move to vodaphone as a friend is on that network and there's good reception in my area. Can I keep my three number and transfer it to a vodaphone PAYG? Can it be done within 24 hours? How much would a vodaphone PAYG sim cost me, i need the cheapest package? All I want for the time being is to mainly receive calls and make a very small call every few days for no more than 10 minutes at a time.

I hope anyone can help me please

Many thanks

Yes you can transfer your number. You need to phone 3 and ask for a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code). Once you have this, give the PAC and phone number to Vodafone. Porting your number across takes about 2 days. (Your number will stay with 3 until the day of the port). On the day of the port your Three SIM will become inactive and some hours later your Vodafone SIM will become active.

Generally, SIMs are free as long as you top up at the same time.

On the subject of tariffs, if you will only make a very occasional call, you could consider a virtual network like ASDA which offers a much cheaper "pence per minute".

This is great, thanks so much. So first I should find a sim only deal from vodaphone, and if I want find a sim only deal for an ASDA virtual network. Then once I have done that, then get the PAC code, then contact vodaphone to transfer the number from my three sim card to my new vodaphone sim card and then wait 2 days and I am good to go. Have I got that right?

Can I also do the above from buying in store at like the carphone warehouse, will I get similar pricing compared to the internet?

Lastly, I have had in the past 2 contracts both on the three network, and I got with these contracts a phone each. Since my contract had finished, I kept the sim card and contacted three who then activated the contract sim card for the phone as a PAYG sim card which I have been using ever since, then I placed this same sim card into the other phone and it's been working. I was wondering if the vodaphone sim card will work in these phones? I thought you need to get the phone unlocked to be able to use other sim cards?

Sorry for all the questions but I really do hope you can answer them all? I really need a sim urgently!

Many thanks in advance

Not quite, with Vodafone you need to port your number in right at the start (so you would have to get the PAC first). With the other networks you can do it any stage.

Because Vodafone do porting in a different way to the other networks, I would go directly through Vodafone (either in-store or online)

Its highly likely you will need to get 3 to unlock the phones, I think they charge £15. I would check this with them.
