help linking up computer to wireless

hi folks

i am connected to broadband using netgear router with virgin broadband, this works fine on my laptop but i want to connect my dads 6 year old computer that doesn't have wireless infaread built in to the broadband

i used a wireless adaptor but it just doesn't get read, the adaptor worked fine on another laptop so i know it aint broke. i also tried linking up to the router using an ethernet cable, it was read by the wireless manager as an adaptor but i still can't connect

could it be something i haven't activated in network or wireless settings??

many thanks

cub

Re: help linking up computer to wireless

What operating system does it have?
Is it patched up to date.
For example, under windows XP there's a patch you need to apply to make WPA/WPA2 security work. You may also need NIC driver updates - some older ones only support WEP encryption which almost no-one uses these days.

Re: help linking up computer to wireless

Search download dot microsoft dot com for KB893357 or something like XP and WPA2 and I expect you'll find it.

Or you might consider putting on th latest XP servicepack which probably inludes it (and all the upder fixes.)
