Not knowing your routers setup so this probably more of a guess, is it a guest account option that needs to be secured.

Netgear is the default SSID of a Netgear router. No Wireless Security is also the default for Netgears and so your PC is showing a Netgear owned by a neighbour.

Some wifi Access Points can facilitate multiple SSID's (with different names, encryption/authentication regimes, etc.) though I've yet to see this feature in "domestic" oriented kit.

What model router do you have?

Re: my router is showing 2 wireless networks, one secured the other not??

whoops should of put that really! its a netgear dg834g v3 mate.

i've had a look through all the settings but could find anything.

i had to do a factory reset of the router the other day to try and get an apple tv i got for xmas to work. it then brings up the "netgear" unsecured network, but i reloaded config settings and got my network up and running again.

the problem is its still showing the netgear one?? it doesn't show up in any other searches from my other wireless devices though, iphone, atv, wii. only on the laptop and if i connect to it, it comes back as limited or no connectivity.

very weird

cheers

Chuck

What happens if you delete your existing wireless connection on the laptop and re-make it?

I think this is the crux of your problem. Doing a factory reset, if the laptop was on at the time, would have let it find the Netgear SSID, before you changed it to your normal one. Windows seems to remember these for some reason.

If my suggestion above doesn't work you can delete the Netgear SSID from within Windows and it shouldn't pick it up again.
