Netgear code

Hi All I have my laptop connected to a netgear router which was installed for me by a friend 10 months ago, I have just recently bought my daughter a notebook for school work and need to get connected to the router. The system is code protected and needs this code to link up but I do not have it nor the friend who did this connection for me can remember what the password is he put in !! is there a way I can find out what the code is so I can link up, or do I have to buy another router and start from scratch ?
Look forword to your help

Best Regards

Re: Netgear code

Try the defaults.

Uername = Admin
Password = Password

You might need to type it twice, I always have to for some reason.

Otherwise I think you can reset to default, but you might have to read up on that.

Re: Netgear code

You certainly won't have to buy a new router.

Firstly try going into Internet Explorer and typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Go to that address and you should be asked for a password and username. try typing in admin as the username and password as the password ( all lower case). See if that gets you into the router config pages.

If it does then click over "Wireless settings" on the left panel. Towards the botton of that screen you should see Security Encryption, your wireless key should be in there.

If not post back and we can go through re-setting the router to default settings and starting from scratch.

That was the IP address of my Netgear router, but another one I setup was 192.168.1.1 - if one doesn't work just try the other. If unsure look at the label on the bottom of the router as the IP address will be on there.

Mark.

Re: Netgear code

All the Netgears that I have installed have been 192.168.0.1.

If you don't know the IP Address of a router, do an ipconfig /all. The Default Gateway will be the IP address of the router.

Re: Netgear code

adsl is 192.168.0.1 cable dsl is 192.168.1.1

a little tip is when you have set your router up get a normal envelope sticker write your new router password and wireless encryption pass word then stick it to the bottom of the router thus never having to worry about finding the piece of paper you wrote the details on

Re: Netgear code

cable DSL as in Virgin Media as your ISP connected via your STB, rather than ADSL via a BT phone line.

You mean a Netgear so-called cable router which, as you rightly say, do have 192.168.1.1 as their IP address but cable does not use DSL. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line or Loop) is strictly for telephone lines. Cable uses different technology and Cable routers do not contain it- that is handled by the Cable Modem. In fact Cable Router is a misnomer but it is the name that people use.

Re: Netgear code

If you still find from your machine that the you cant access the router it maybe that the default IP address has been changed the easiest way to find this is

Start --> Run --> Type CMD click OK --> In the command window that opens type ipconfig press enter

This should display a default gateway, probably under wireless network settings. Type this address into your web browser and that should do the trick

Or a different way of achieving the same objective?

Re: Netgear code

All routers have a manual reset on the outer casing; it's a small hole with a metal plate. You click it with a pin or something and that will fully reset the router
