Yes you can create two separate drives if you want (with QNAP you can anyway). There effectively two separate volumes but not sure why you would want this with a NAS.

That's good to know thanks for that info I looked on the Synology website and from scanning through it I think you can only do this with 1 drive, although I may have misunderstood it !!

I don't want RAID0 as I'd like to have the full space of the 2 drives available to me for storage without increasing the possibility of failure by having them striped.

As I'd be backing up to an external drive off the back of it I can't see the point of RAID1 either. RAID1 doesn't interest me because it's not a proper backup (IMHO).

I have a question based on this, great bit of information btw. Looking at getting this NAS system: Synology Network Attached Storage - DS211j Products Specifications

Although i may need to look for something cheaper but i'll get to that when i need to.

What i want to know is why should i not rely on RAID 1 for backups? I mean it creates a copy of the HDD so shouldn't that be enough? I don't need a crazy amount of storage so a 2 bay RAID 1 system should be fine for me.

Also what about getting everything to be wireless? Someone in another thread said i would need wires for HD content which i really don't like the idea of. I will be connecting threee laptops, one desktop and potentially 2 TVs with SkyHD on one.

RAID should never be seen as a backup which is why I can't see the point of it! If you accidentally delete a file or a folder on a RAID system then you've lost it completely as it will delete it from the raided drive as well.

while i understand the point that a mirrored 2 disk NAS is not quite a true backup, it does give me a lot of peace of mind

i got a reduced price netgear stora, and bought an extra 1Tb disk as a mirror. Total cost was about £150. Despite some adverse reviews, I found the Stora totally silent, and very effective

previously i had lots of important files on a couple of PCs. I now check them off the stora, work on them, and check them back in.

yes, we could have a fire etc, but i think i would have other problems if that happened!

Does anyone ever run an antivirus scan on their NAS drive? If so, are there any free ones which allow you to scan a network share?

AVAST free scans network share folders. ( others probably also do the same)

Cheers. I've had a quick look in my MSE and I can't see an option to scan network drives but will have another look.
