Thanks dam... No other way to watch tv on this server then? W7 pro I think I like 3x the price of whs11.

Its actually the dvbserver sw I have running on whs & dvbviewer as the client on my main PC. U get the lot for €15.

I use a Blackgold PCIE DVB-T2 card don'y know if ur usb stick will work.

Things can get a bit more complex if u add recording to the mix but a lot of that I think is due to me using didiguide a 3rd party EPG rather than the dvdviewer recording service.

The client also works on whs so u can watch TV on the whs box itself.

I just use windows Task Scheduler to hibernate mine and only really start it with the power button or by sending a WOL packet.

With WHS2011 and lights-out I also had unexplaind startups which I never resolved before going to Win Pro. No issues since.

thats what I'm trying to do with whs but it doesn't seem to go in to hibernation, I think its to do with the server not being logged in as it works fine if I've been using remote login to do something. What have you set it to to make it hibernate? My task just runs a .bat file that contains the shutdown/h command

It went into hibernate with WHS2011 when I used that OS after enabling it with command prompt (disabled by default)

A while back now with the old N36L thread but I mentioned it here: HP ProLiant MicroServer N36L Owner's Thread

I don't use a .bat file just a schedule:

Under Actions Tab for a new Task Schedule

- Start A Program as the Action
- Program/script Shutdown
- Add Arguments -h

Just started my installation. I am shifting the 250gb supplied drive into the top cabinet. Is it essential to flash the bios once this is done?
Will it not work if I do not do it??

Thanks in advance

Worth reading a few pages back, this gets answered a lot

If you're installing an HDD into the optical drive area then I wouldn't bother with any BIOS update. If you're installing an SSD then go for it.

Thanks, can't get the thing to update, I have made the USB disc and insert, boot and it comes up with little smily icon, reboot and no new bios settings to change... May just leave it then!

If not right click computer, manage, storage, disk management.

If u do get a 2.7gb partition it might not work with the whs backup sw but I don't use that.

Not sure.

But if u right click on a partition in disk management I think u will see some options there. U may need to create & format some partion(s) 1st.

night

I did that and see the raid-5 choice but it is greyed out -- I have 4 drives all formatted with the 4k allotment size and gpt

what am I missing here?

Wow what a fun project (thanks to the wise men of this board) -- my 8.383 TB Raid-5 Volume is building!

I bought 4-3tb seagate external drives for $139 each and stripped out the drives the bare drive inside sells for $170.

What are people using to transcode video to iPhone/iPad/Android.

I have only used Plex but I know there are more available and wondered what people have more success with.
Hoping to get my N40L with 4gb ram and 2 x 2tb next week!

Just tried Plex on an Atom NetBook I have and it had some trouble with 1.5gb+ 720p tv rips like Game of Thrones but smaller 720p rips like Family Guy played fine, so the better CPU should be more than enough for 720p tv and films.

Hi

Took delivery of this last week. Running WHS2011, with 8GiB RAM delivered yesterday (Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz i5 Memory Kit.. | Ebuyer.com).

Have 2x250Gi and 2x2TB drives. Booting from the 250 a the moment, but will be loading the OS onto a 128G USB.

I intend use the machine to host remote sessions so might look into R2 or VM's. This thread seems excellent so will be checking in again.

hi all.
can anyone give me some info/links to fitting a hard drive/drvies to the empty drive bay on the prolient?
sure i've seen some photos on here but i can seem to find them
....would probably put the 250gb supplied hard drive with the OS on in there
...would it be a problem to move the os hard drive into another bay?

cheers

The photos are on this thread

The part you require seems to be a Icy Dock IB-168SK single cold swap bay. Not used it myself so can't recommend it although it is something I will be doing shortly.

You'll need a SATA data cable, go for one that's 50cm or more, and a right-angle at one end might be a good idea for the motherboard connection. Also Molex/SATA power cable too.

If you mean the optical bay at the top, you'll need something for mounting a 3.5" drive into a 5.25" bay instead. I got a pack from eBay, searched for "Hard Disk Drive Mounting Bracket Adapter" and it was £1.50 or thereabouts.

Fiddly to install, mind you.

If you're installing an SSD up there, just use some tape.
