Pull out the dodgy one and run diagnostics on it! 40 degrees is fine. My hitachi run at 50+.

I don't want to pull drives out while a parity rebuild is in progress.

Will do.

I kept a drive precleared but not used so that in the event of a failed drive I could use the spare one very quickly. But whats the point in keeping a drive spare when the rebuild happened on its own anyway?

The rebuild is going at 84KB/sec. That seems very very slow.

Odd about the write speed and that unraid rebuilt with the dodgy drive in place. Maybe a glitch. Just wait until it finishes.

Dan a loss of 1.2tb is painful but it can be all replaced very easily and now that you understand ripping better you could probably do it in half the time. Providing you took a snapshot (or a *.TXT file) of the files before hand then you are ok. What happened to cause you loss of the data?

I deleted my post but you must have been in the process of replying. Sorry.

The data reapeared for some reason. I don't know what the hell is going on with the server to be honest, lots of errors and failed parity builds etc. Im running with no parity for the time being, its the only way I can access my files.

Ill update as time goes by.

For those that didn't see my original post I was saying I wouldn't recommend building a home server for media streaming. Too much cost and time spent when physical disks do a better job with so much less hassle.

There is something very dodgy with rc5. I ran a smart check on a spun down disk with rc5 and it red balled it! On a spun up disk smart was fine. What controllers are you using? I suggest you use test2.

I am using these:
Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8, 8-Port SAS/SATA Card - Scan.co.uk

Test2?

I have the saslp too and rc5 was bad!! You probably ran into a blk handled error like i did. If you Goto the main forum at the top it will say rc6 test2 is the latest software. Click there and download it. You will probably notice that your parity check speeds with suck on test2.

Test2 is probably the most stable but it has the worst write and parity speed. I would suggest that you do not use anything less than the Test software.

Ok ill stick with it. Speeds aren't a problem right now, i just want parity protection.

Its these damn sas cards that cause most of the problems. I have been looking for motherboards with loads of sata ports so that I can eliminate the sas card and the most I have found is 14 sata ports. But that motherboard is about £200+ and I would need a new cpu which will be another £100+. 14 ports may not be enough though! Decisions decisions.

HighPoint do an 8 port card. I've used them in WHS builds but not in an unRAID build so dont know if they're supported.

Thats double the price of the Supermicro SASLP-MV8!

I could probably get a Arock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional that has 10 sata ports (plus one MV8 equals 18 ports overall) but it seems excessive for Unraid.

This highpoint one is roughly the same price as the supermicro cards;
Highpoint 2680SGL RocketRAID - RR2680SGL - Scan.co.uk

Id happily spend the money if I knew it would fix the problem but I don't.

It uses roughly the same Marvell chip as the Supermicro so could still be problematic. The Gigabyte UD7 had 14 sata ports before it was redesigned! You wouldn't need any sas cards for that board.

Ive got 16 drives in my server. Id love to find a board that doesn't need sata cards but I don't think they exist. I could get away with 14 drives quite easily though as a few are still empty.

There is a way to get around using sas cards. Get a 12 port sata motherboard and with 12 x 4tb hdd which should give you about 44TB which should be enough. But this would be extremely expensive as the cheapest 4TB hdds are about £205 delivered each.

Hi all

Hoping someone can give me some advice, bit of an odd one. I've just about finished a house refurbishment project, and I've now moved my server into a different room. On booting it up earlier, I noticed that neither the cpu fan nor the HDD cage fans are running

The case fans are running, but nothing else...but it all boots and works perfectly. After 30 mins drive temps are no more than 33 degrees and everything is streaming fine. What gives Anyone come across this before?

Thanks in advance

Unconnect and reconnect all of the connectors. Check bios to see if they have been turned off. Get a spare fan and test the CPU fan connector and hdd cages.

Thanks, bit strange that both the HDD cages and CPU fan aren't working though? I just hope it's not a motherboard problem

In this game it could be anything! Apart from that how is your server going? I am upgrading all 16 of my hdds from 2tb to 3tb. Its extremely painfully time consuming.

All going well I'm waiting until 4TB drives come down in price as I don't want to migrate twice!

Just wondering if there'd be any interest from anyone in buying my complete build? It's currently sitting at 32.7TB capacity with 19 HDDs, but now that phase 1 of my house build project is finished I'm thinking of building a new server with 3TB HDDs and just as importantly, I need my server to be rack mounted.

Anyone got any idea how much the build would be worth?

If there's interest I'll stick an ad up in the classifieds

You might get more money for it if you sell bits off separately and retain the parts you want for your new machine.

Used 2TB drives appear to sell in the range of £50-70 on eBay.

If you’re looking for rackmounted cases – x-case have a good range.
