[Speed test] Am i getting the correct speed?

Hi all,

This is my first post so be gentle

I've recently had a few talks with my ISP (AOL - UK) and when i told them the speed i am getting (200kb/s down and 44kb/s upload) they told me it should be more like 1mb/sec down. Unfortunately i wasn't calling them for that reason so i didnt question them further but it got me wondering and today i took 3 speed tests.

Here are the online results of all 3:

Now from what i can tell its downloading at 1.6 MB/s approx but whenever i download a file from megaupload or rapidshare or just browse around the max download i'm getting is about 200kb/sec. I ran these tests at 03:20 AM GMT.

My router is a Netgear DG834G and the router page shows:
Modem Status Connected DownStream Connection Speed 2144 kbps UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps VPI 0 VCI 38

I'm a bit of a noob so any help is appreciated

Am i getting the right speed or is there something weird going on?

Thanks!

David.

Re: [Speed test] Am i getting the correct speed?

Thise 3 speed tests all agree pretty well that you're getting 1.6 M
bps d/stream and 0.4Mbps upstream. Which also tallies with what your router is telling you, there's alwways some loss from the actual sync speed shown by the router compared to your actual throughput, normally the throughput is around 79-85% of your sync speed.

200KB/s is about right for 1600kbps speed as one is measuring in Bits and the other in Bytes. There are 8 bits in a Byte. The uppercase B denotes a Byte, lower case a bit.

As to whether it's the maximum your line can give you depends on your line stats, from your Netgear router you can find the Attenuation and Noise margin under Router Status and Show Statistics.

If you enter those into this site along with your sync speed it'll give you a pretty good estimation of what your line's capable of.

Give it a go and post back your results

Re: [Speed test] Am i getting the correct speed?

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. I just checked it out and i'm seeing

Line attenuation down 51 db, up 15 db.
Noise margin down 10db, up 23 db.

I ran that test and i got this:

I'm under the impression that is quite noisy. I've had engineers over before who said we're far away from the exchange so that could possibly have something to do with it as well i suppose.

Cheers,

David.
