Home network does not allow me to print...

I have a desktop in the office in the house and also a laptop that connects wirelessly. I can share files between the two with no problems but for some reason i cannot share the printer that is connected to the desktop via usb.

system is as follows. Desktop (windows xp) connected to d link router via cat 5. Laptop running Windows 7 that connects wirelessly to the d link router. The printer is connected to the desktop as said above.

Now on the laptop (windows 7 os) i go to the printers bit in control panel and click add printer. i then click addd a network, wireless or bluetooth printer. it then does the searching for available printers. i can then see the printer that is connected to the desktop, in this case named Dellphot on Ian-PC.
Sharing is enabled on the printer on the desktop. So i now click on that printer and click next and get the error message "windows cannot connect to printer".

can anyone help me out with this? is it possible to share this printer? been trying to work this out all afternoon and starting to grate on me. hopefully i have explained this clear enough that someone will know what to do.

Re: Home network does not allow me to print...

you dont say what model of printer?

I would look on the printers help forums - it may just be that you need to install it in a different way like install its custom software on the laptop, then just configure the port

so try downloading the latest software for it for a start and checking its FAQs on the website

not all printers are the same, especially multi-function ones......
