Do Routers / Modems have to connected to the Master Socket?

Can anyone tell me if Modem/Routers have to be connected to the main BT Master Socket or can they be connected to a telephone extension socket?

Thanks in advance

Re: Do Routers / Modems have to connected to the Master Socket?

Hi,
Funnily enough Iv spent ages fiddling around with my set up of routers/PCs.

I have just moved my router from the master socket to an extension and there is no drop in speed as far as i can see, (appears to actually have increased but iv only tested it twice )

I had a choice between having my router on the master socket and everything connected via Wifi, or having the router on an extension and mu PC, PS3, BDP all wired via LAN cable. Out of the two I have chosen the latter.

HTH

It depends on your internal wiring and how 'noisy' electrically your house is.

As has been said, note your line speed, move the router, reboot the router, check the Line Speed again.

You may also want to look at the threads here about the Test Socket on the Master Socket to see if your extension wiring is causing a speed drop anyway.

Yes.

Our modem is connected to an extension and that is connected to a switch which is connected to a Mac, Xbox1, and a 360 with no problems.

Re: Do Routers / Modems have to connected to the Master Socket?

Cheers for the info, on the whole I think the house is currently quite "noisy" the amount of interference we get on the cordless phone is rediculous and getting some new ones is on the to-do list once the house is finished.

The Router uses cables to connect the 360 & PS3 - the PC & iPhone connect wirelessly.

The main box where the phone line enters the house "was" on an outside wall, it's now inside the house in the hall of the new extension. My questioning is in relation to how best I connect the router up in a new AV room in the extension, I'd rather have all my gaming kit connected by wires so want to get a new new Router for the Av room connected to a socket in there, but just wondering if I'm better off installing a new master socket in there, or just an extension socket, which may be about a 15m cable run.

Any advice?

You won't really be able to tell unless you try the tests.

You should only have one Master Socket. However there is a pre-filtered type of NTE5 type faceplate (I posted the details here before, Solwise I think.) that can output the A & B connections unfiltered to an extension.

However and alternatively, as you will be running a cable anyway, I'd leave the router plugged into the Master Socket and run a single length of Cat5 into the gaming room where I would put an Ethernet switch (about a tenner), into which all the device could plug. Ethernet is far less sensitive to EMI.

They don`t have to be connected to a master socket and they can be connected to an extension, no maybe about it, if it works for you is a different matter, but they can.

So what you are saying is that you can plug an ADSL modem into an extension socket but it may not work. Is that correct?

Re: Do Routers / Modems have to connected to the Master Socket?

IMHO different set ups may need different solutions. We were connecting to an extension socket and getting 2 to 3 mbps download. By replacing the faceplate on the master socket with one of these:
XTE-2005 Filtered Master Faceplate - ADSL Nation
our download speed is now 7+ mpbs The original wiring from the master socket was messy to say the least - now it's been bypassed and the restriction it put on our broadband has gone away.

Thank you for making the point so well.

Re: Do Routers / Modems have to connected to the Master Socket?

BT recommended to me to plug the router into the master socket. This is practicable in our house but the router runs fine on an upstairs socket. YMMV.
