am i too old to learn?

Basically it has been playing on my mind lately that I want to learn to play the guitar.

I am 30 and into rock music.

Am I too old?

And what should I get electric or acoustic?

Re: am i too old to learn?

nah your not too old, never too old!

Personally I'd be tempted to go for an electric, easier on the hands than an acoustic (especially if its a cheapish acoustic thats not set up properly). Get a cheap amp and maybe a distortion pedal (that will hide a multitude of errors).

I tried learning when I was younger with one of those learn guitar books but it didnt work for me (i also had a terrible guitar and the action was about an inch!) so i packed it in.

I tried again with a cheap electric guitar and a tab book of nirvanas nevermind and havent looked back since.

Nice thing about an electric for me is I like to have a little play (oh er) with it, unplugged, whilst im watching the tv, not too loud but still good enough to write songs and formulate ideaas...

good luck

Re: am i too old to learn?

You're never too old.

I'm 36. I started playing when I was 16 and got to a decent standard by my early 20's. But I lost interest and stopped playing for many years. For the last 3-4 years I have gotten back into it. Now, I certainly don't claim to be any good, but I can't imagine [I]not [I] playing guitar as my #1 hobby.

There is nothing physically to stop you learning. It's about motivation. Do you want to play guitar for the rest of your life? Try it and see. Most people give up after a few weeks or months. But some stick with it and guitar becomes a lifelong companion. There are plenty of threads here recommending cheap amps and guitars so if you don't take to it, it's no great loss.

Go for it! You'll only regret it if you don't give it a try.

I will warn you it will be quite painful at first but once you get some callouses you'll be fine. I've been playing since I was 12 and I'm sooo glad I stuck at it, I couldn't imagine my life without my guitar.

Re: am i too old to learn?

For a starter guitar you could do a lot worse than a yamaha pacifica. Personally I find them much better value for money than the equivalent squier/epiphone.

Yup. Yamaha Pacifica 012 + Roland Microcube is a hard to beat beginners combo and can be had for less than £200.

38 when I took up the drums properly. Although I wish I had started in my teens - I certainly didn't feel too old to start.
