Advice on electronic drum kits.

I am looking at buying my son an electronic drum kit for christmas and wondered what peoples experiences were of the Alesis range? I know the Roland kits are supposedly the ones to go for but even the cheapest ones are a bit more that I want to pay (plus the drum heads look much bigger on the Alesis kits) as I don't know if he will stick with it.

I am looking at this one which is a relatively new product so any advice would be gratefully received.

Regards

Steve

Re: Advice on electronic drum kits.

Your right when you say Roland are the swingers when it comes to electric kits.

However, I have played the Alesis kits (not that specific model) and they are perfectly acceptable kits. Good build quality and can be folded up to compact well.

They suffer compared to Roland as the heads are less realistic and aren't as tunable to your particular feel.

But for the money they are well worth it, have you thought about second hand Roland maybe?

Re: Advice on electronic drum kits.

Thanks for the response Turbo.

I have had a look around at second hand Roland kits but the ones I have found tend to be the better kits and are still way over the price I want to pay.

I was ready to go for the DM6 kit but I spoke to a guy at GAK and he completely dismissed the Alesis kits (even though they had a big range of Alesis kits?).

I got the feeling that they did not make much on the Alesis kit as they did not seem to keen to offer me any interest free deal even though the value was well above the threshold for the offer.

I have still got a couple of months before I need to make the purchase so I will keep my eye on the classifieds.

Re: Advice on electronic drum kits.

Drummer I know has some Alesis pads that he uses with his Yamaha DTX-treme - says they are really good for the money.

Yes the Roland kits are fabulous - but also extremely expensive for the higher end (more realistic mesh head) kits.

Take a look at the Yamaha DTX range. Some really nice kits there with great sounds and expandability.

Hi

When I spoke to the drum specialist at GAK he dismissed the Alesis kits as being quite poor (I was looking at the DM5 Pro kit to start with due to the offer they have on at the moment but apparantly, according to GAK, the drum sounds are over 10 years old and this is why I looked at the newer DM6 kit).

Still think I am going to give the DM6 a try. Should be fine as a starter kit for my son.

Regards

Steve

Don't forget: Take it away from Arts Council England

I used this scheme to get my Roland kit on interest free over 9 months.
